Kindle Voyage - First Impressions

I just noticed the battery life is shorter on the voyage. When I looked at the technical details for both Voyage and Paperwhite, the Voyage says 6 weeks battery life while the PW says 8 weeks, both at the same light setting with wifi off. I didn't even think to check this before. I noticed my battery was more than half drained after a couple of days and I read another reviewer saying the same thing and that's when it occurred to me to check.

or maybe they are just being more honest this time around - I doubt that they have downgraded the battery?

Yes, there is very minor ghosting, but to me it is preferable to every page having a slight black flash underneath the text as you turn. You can have it either way via a setting. Many prefer to refresh every page. I notice the ghosting less than the black flash so for me having Page Refresh set to off is less distracting while reading.

For the first time I'm thinking of getting a Kobo Aura HD or H20, from what I have read on this site it seems to be superior to the Kindle Paperwhite/Voyage in most areas with one glaring exception, the full page refresh, does the H20 still refresh every 6 pages? Is there any way to set that number to every 12 pages?

For the people that have the Paperwhite only refresh after each chapter, do you have ghosting issues because of this?

I'm not sure about the H2O, but I'm pretty sure that my Kobo Aura can be set to refresh every chapter.

My Kobo Aura can refresh every 1, 5, 10 pages or every chapter.

Thank you, the strange thing is that the Kobo Aura HD seems to have a 6 page limitation in screen refresh, I don't know why Kobo would take a step backward but at this moment it seems the Kobo Aura is the only alternative if I don't want to deal with the frequent page refreshes.

The AURA is a different device in many ways than the Aura HD. I think it came out AFTER the Aura HD as well, maybe? I would not say the HD is a step back from the Aura. Though they may appear to run the same firmware, they are not actually the same under the hood.

Have you got WiFi turned on? That will at least halve the battery life.

I usually kept wifi on with the pw2 without any noticeable problem, but with the voyage, I might have to start turning it off since the battery won't last as long. After a couple of days of use, the battery on the voyage was more than halfway drained.

What is the most effective way to give amazon feedback? I would like to be able to program the page turn buttons. I wish I could set the line on the left to move back and the line on the right to move forward. I am not using the dots at all to go back a page. It's easier to swipe left on the screen. However, I am getting used to using the line on the right of the device to move forward.

It would at least be worthwhile reading on it for a couple of days with WiFi turned off, and compare the battery drain.

Possibly, but possibly not. If you have something in place, you tend to leave it in place. If you don't have a feature, you tend to not go out of your way to add in, especially if you have taken it away. Cost would be the deciding factor. It's not more expensive to leave the customizations in place, but rather more expensive to remove them - new programming, etc.

If Amazon did buy them, the QC and CS would be better - at least the CS.

Moot points all, since they'll not likely do it. When I emailed Amazon about the fonts I specifically mentioned Kobo and all their fonts and scalability. Couldn't resist.
