Now I want to replace mine for sure. I wonder when the best time would be to get a replacement. Maybe just before the 30-days window?

I would request a replacement now. If it's not good you can return it/them.

Awesome. Thanks for the advice. I forgot that they'll let me keep the old one until I can compare it with the replacement.

Maybe I'll wait just a couple more days, to see if other people are getting good replacement units.

It seems to me that the most recent Amazon reviews for the product seem to be more on the positive side, and more people seem to be saying that their screens aren't having color problems.

I wonder why there is no consistency in replacement dates. I was originally told there are no replacements. Period. A refund was processed and I was advised to place a new order (Nov.24th shipping). Called the next day and was told the earliest I could expect a replacement was the first week of November. Called a third time and was told the replacement would ship that day.

You have to get the right folks. Escalation for Kindle is the dept. that helped me. When I first called I got someone not in the US, and she said you can return it, we don't have replacements. I said NO and asked her for someone in the US and she transferred me. I asked for Escalation and he sent me right back to somewhere outside the US. The third time I made it clear that I want US, Kindle, and got Chance. I told him I wanted Kindle Escalation, in the US, and got Andrew. Andrew was on his game. Replacement was bad, but Andrew was great!

I was in a loop for a bit, though, before I was able to help them understand what I needed.

Is it possible that the different shipping locations get their batches from different chinese factories with different QC ?

We always get shipments from KY and while far from perfect, my last 5 Kindles seem to have been... hmmm the best they could be; that is poor design sometimes, but not defective.

My KV1 shipped from San Bernadino, CA, the replacement (worse still) shipped from Whitestown, IN.

I would be interested to know where the good ones are being shipped from. Thanks in advance, in case anyone wants to volunteer this info.
