Send to device WIFI connection

Is there a way to see the H20 as connected device under Calibre when it's only connected by WIFI? I would like to be able to use the "sent to device" function of Calibre without usb connection?

No. The best you can do is run the calibre server use the browser to download the books.

If you have koreader installed you can active "Calibre Companion" (needs wifi for obvious reasons). And then you can use the "start wireless connection" option under the "share" button in calibre to send ebooks via wifi.

But with the software from kobo (it is called nickel) that does not work.

And then there is also the option to install grive which syncs your Google Drive via wifi.

But you can't install calibre companion on the Kobo because it's an Android application, not made for Linux isn't it?

I *think* what he is saying is that koreader implements a connection using the same protocol as Calibre Companion does.

And from browsing the source, it certainly does

Koreader has also implemented OPDS support, and includes a "Local calibre catalog" selection. I have downloaded books from the Gutenberg catalog, and the ManyBooks catalog, and the Internet Archive catalog. I also added the Baen Free catalog, and downloaded a book from there. Don't forget to poke the WiFi symbol in the top menu to turn WiFi on and off.

Calibre "connect/share" option includes "Start the content server" which will give you the IP address and port data to setup the Local calibre catalog in KOreader. Just tried it and it works fine.

Luck;
Ken

You can give Koreader a try, it will not effect the stock Kobo software. This is the easiest way I know to install a launcher and the KOreader folder/program. You can download the official release of KOreader here. There are Kindle and Kobo and Android releases, pick the one for your device.

If you start in "File Manager"and bring up the menu, poke the icon with a magnifying glass, then "Local calibre catalog" you should see it asking for a URL and a Port number. If you open calibre on your PC and select the Connect/share icon, you should see a Start content server it may have an IP address that looks like (192.168.1.##,port 8080) - That is what you should use for the "Local calibre catalog data.

This is assuming that your PC has access to WiFi, through a router or access point. Also, you will need to turn your Kobo's WiFi on by poking the WiFi symbol, on the bottom right of the menu. Then anytime you have calibre running and the server started, you will be able to search/browse the calibre library that calibre has open, from your kobo running KOreader.

I have version 890 of KOreader running at the moment, But I think it was working on the official release, as well.

Luck;
Ken

Ken I think that is for the opds connection not the calibre companion connection.

In the current version I don't see anything labeled "calibre companion".

When you access the "Local calibre catalog" you get the following:

By Newest
By Title
By Authors
By Languages
By Publisher
By Rating
By Series
By Tags

If I select "By Newest" I get four pages of a listing of ebooks starting with the last book I added to calibre, and continuing back through additions and modified books.

By Title = an alphanumeric listing of titles

By Authors = A through Z listed Selecting a letter gives you a list of authors with last names starting with that letter, selecting an Author gives you a listing of his books.

etcetera...

I don't know what the calibre companion does but Something like this would make sense.

Luck;
Ken

calibre companion uses a wireless device driver, the connection is managed by calibre and you send books via calibre Send-to-device. With plugin support, autoconversion, etc.

Please see https://github.com/koreader/koreader...ibre-Companion for documentation on this feature.

Using this changes the manner in which material is sent from a pull to a push, so transfers are controlled by calibre and not the device itself.

Hmm... There is a calibrecompanion.koplugin in the KOreader plugins folder.

"This plugin implements a simple Calibre Companion protocol that communicates
with Calibre Wireless Server from which users can send documents to Koreader
devices directly with WIFI connection.

Note that Calibre Companion(CC) is a trade mark held by MultiPie Ltd. The
Android app Calibre Companion provided by MultiPie is closed-source. This
plugin only implements a subset function of CC according to the open-source
smart device driver from Calibre source tree.

More details can be found at calibre/devices/smart_device_app/driver.py."

I don't see how it is initiated, within the KOreader menus, if what I described isn't how it works. Maybe that is for a later release.

Luck;
Ken

So, you can have it either or both ways via WiFi. You can send from calibre to your device and/or you can select books from the calibre library using your device.

Thank you Ken. But yes, I definitely would like to use Calibre companion plugin to see my H20 as a connected device under Calibre. (WIFI connection)
Use of odps and Local calibre catalog is not very useful for me because I can already download ebooks from calibre library with the Server option directly from the web interface of the Kobo.
When the H20 is physically connected to Calibre, I can select what kind of format I would like to sent to the device (Kepub, epub....)
I've checked https://github.com/koreader/koreader...ibre-Companion instructions but I don't see any Calibre companion tab in Koreader.
