Multiple metadata sources?

I'm confused about whether it is a bad thing to select more than one source to download metadata. At present I have three selected and am wondering if this is the reason I have the following problem:

If I select a single book with missing metadata and use download metadata there is no problem. However if I select more than one book and use bulk download of metadata it always fails to download the metadata.

Or is there some other reason for the failure?

I suspect 'some other'

I use 4 DATA sources that I have fine tuned the configuration by source (no tags from some, no rating from most...) to meet my data sanitation whims.

Note you can also configure cover sources and priority.
Neither need to match another. you get to cherry pick your Fav source

Okay so that set me on the right path for a fix.

Would I be wrong to think that applying no adjustments other than "download metadata" (default?) should download the comments even when multiple books are selected?

I would expect: Yes
But it has been so long (2010) since those settings have been Vanilla

ISBN or other book ID is sometimes needed (or NOT in the case of really old PAPER titles I was logging into Calibre as 'empty books') for success.

Odd variations (corrected to be Uniform) in Author can trip things up if no ID.

Note that from time to times, metadata sources redesign and the Calibre scrape routines become 'broken'.
For the (distribution) defaults, these tend to get noticed quickly and get fixed in the next release. For others, someone has to mention 'Site xyz is now broken'

You could list the ones (by name) you have enabled for Comments
