Kindle Voyage - First Impressions

Maybe maybe not - we are probably both wrong. From what you describe - with the blue always at the usb end even when the Voyage is flipped upside down it is a more complex problem than what I thought. My theory was that looking straight ahead it looks white, when looking up it is more yellow and looking down more blue.

Anyone care to post a picture of a Voyage in complete darkness - only the frontlight on?

Edit: Alas sounds like it is somewhat similar to the PW problems. Not really a problem of external light, but all led and lightguide. I will pass on the Voyage until there is no more problems reported here. Meanwhile I will keep my PW1 which now got serious competition from my Note 4. It is getting cold, reading outside not really feasable or comfortable until spring (for me).

The replacement is worse than the original before I even get to setup. I'm not bothering to do anything with it other than send it back. The screen lighting is uneven, blotchy this time, and the yellow cast extends further downward. It is more diagonal this time, as well, whereas the first one is somewhat uniform horizontally.

I went to Best Buy tonight and looked at the voyage demo. Was exactly the same as mine. Yellow top, blue bottom, and slight color hues as well. The PW2 was next to it and looked superior as the screen was so much more even. Sad really as I wanted to love the voyage.

I am fine with top end model costing more. But to justify it, it needs to be top notch quality compared to any cheaper models (or at least same quality). I don't see it yet - maybe Amazon will fix the issues with the light.

Correct on all counts, and I'm going to let it be for now. The 2nd V is going back immediately. Much, MUCH worse than the first with terrible diagonal blotching and color graduation that goes lower still.

I can't believe that I'm even saying this, but for the moment at least, I am keeping V #1. I am very frustrated, but it is better for my eyes than either my PW1 or the PW2 that I ordered as a backup in case the V #2 was bad. My new PW 2014 is creamy and I prefer the lighting and tone of the V and my PW1 so it is going back with the V #2.

I would, but I don't think that I'm strong enough right now to take the bashing that will come if no one sees what I see. I may feel differently tomorrow.

My Note 3 is an absolute joy, and has been from day 1, and I love it so much that I am afraid to upgrade to the Note 4. I went from an Evo 3G, which was rooted and AMAZING, to an Evo 4G LTE and the performance difference was night and day. I wanted to throw my LTE at my windshield every time I used it (much like I want to do with my PW1).

This is the thing. I will pay for quality, in whatever device I choose, but the quality needs to be there and I don't feel I should be a paying BETA tester. Samsung taught me that, though I should have stuck with it and not given in and settled for my PW1 and my K3.

Was the PW creamy or more on the white side?

That is why I don't think I will attempt the replacement game this time around. I can make mine work for me, although it is way less than perfect. Let us just call my Voyage marginally acceptable, but way overpriced. I just don't think I would get a better one because it sounds like most of them match what I got or they are worse. This just seems like a terrible replay of two years ago with the PW1s! If I had a good PW2 I'm sure I would have returned mine and moved on to something else.

From what I remember about my PW2, this sounds spot on. The screen was more consistently white to cream than the Voyage, but the text was not nearly as sharp as on the Voyage. There were very faint and small shadows at the bottom of the PW2 near the LEDs, but those were below all but the last line or two of text and were not too much of a distraction.

If my PW1 were better I wouldn't be so desperate, and that is how I feel right now. IMO it is a bad joke and a terrible replay of the PW1 situation.

You are talking about the Paperwhite and not the Voyage you saw at BB, right? I'm asking about the PW.

That's what I was afraid of. I'm better off staying with my PW1 than getting a PW2 I don't like the color and tone of, and staying, albeit begrudgingly, with my V #1. The only saving grace is that I have the deferment and that is lessening the blow to my ego somewhat.

Well I was never able to find a PW1 that was a keeper. All the ones they sent me (4 or 5) were very blotchy and too distracting to read on. I did get a good PW2 on the first try. No splotches and much better consistency across the screen than any of the PW1s I tried. But some people had to go through several PW2 replacements before finding a keeper. So it was hit and miss, but probably not as bad as the PW1 hits and misses.

I agree, stick with what you have if it works for you. I'm hesitant to say it because I don't want to upset anyone on here who has a perfect screen on their voyage and is happy with it, but to me I personally feel that most suffer from the two toned screen. I'm not saying "all" as I haven't seen every one obviously, I'm only saying I personally see it on all the pics posted on here and other forums, also on mine, and also on the Best Buy demo. Therefore, it's hard for me to see past what I'm seeing myself. That is all I have to go by. I agree that you're better off not playing the replacement game. While maybe you could end up happier, I think the odds are you won't. I find the whole thing frustrating, especially considering they are calling it a premium device. I'd love to find a perfect voyage, but will stick with my PW2 since I just don't feel hopeful enough about getting a better replacement.

Oh, I'm sorry, I misread your post. The PW2 in Best Buy was more cooler, I'd say. It's sometimes hard to tell without comparing them to other devices directly in more natural lighting than Best Buy. Plus it was hard to compare it to the voyage since the voyage was half warm, half cool. My PW2 is of a warmer tone, however.

I can add that after seeing numerous PW2's in person, often at the same time, they all varied in tone. Some cool, some warm. Some very cool, some very warm. The screens vary quite a lot on these devices from my experience.

Wow, I was in BB this afternoon getting the Origami case and until I read your post about looking at another Voyage at BB it never even occurred to me that I should have done that. D'oh!! I'm sure I walked right by a display unit but must have had tunnel vision or perhaps a brain fart!!! I usually don't pull a Homer Simpson, d'oh!
