Why do you need it?

Calibre is written in Python. You would need a working ARM port of Python to provide Calibre.

There's a Python for Android intended for SL4A (Scripting Layer for Android), but I don't know if it's up to Calibre. (The best way to get Calibre up on Android would likely be to rewrite in in Java, but I don't see Kovid doing so.)

Even if it is, I wouldn't want to try to run it on my Android 4.2 tablet. It would be painfully slow. I run Calibre 64 bit on a quad-core Win7 machine, and performance is splendid. I don't need Calibre on the tablet.

I would like a program that can parse the metadata Calibre sends to the tablet when I add books, so that I can look up what's on the tablet outside of my eBook viewer, but that's a different matter.

Thanks for the reminder. I was aware of Calibre Companion, and it was on my add-to-tablet list. It just got bumped up.

True. Although there is no compiled binary from Kovid, linux ARM distros will create their own packages, and the calibre source code is not incompatible with ARM.

In fact, the Pi has been mentioned here on MR before, and Kovid walked a few people through building it from source -- but I would suggest using ArchLinuxArm, since they are up to date and only Raspbian etc. require you to compile all your own software in order to reach modern times.

Windows RT users are left out in the cold but then you deserve everything if you use that abomination.

And I grabbed it and installed it. But unless I'm missing the obvious, I've run into an issue. CC seems only able to index and search books added by it connecting to a Calibre server instance. There doesn't seem to be a way to point it at my existing eBook library on my SD card and say "Index this." (The existing library is several gigabytes and thousands of titles.)

Unless there is a way to do that, it looks like it won't be useful for the job I bought it to do.

Not an abomination - it's just Windows cross-compiled for the ARM architecture. The abominable factor is the relative lack of eco-system, and the limited number of apps you can run under WinRT.

I have no doubt MS will want to change that, but I don't see it happening quickly.

From the FAQ:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...4&postcount=14

And note that CC is primarily meant to organize books according to calibre-style metadata management, and works best when using it as a device-connected-to-calibre.
calibre is meant to be used as the source of everything, on account of ebooks do not do the best job of embedding all the metadata that calibre tracks.

However, per the link, you should be able to match currently-stored books to calibre's database. Hopefully the metadata is good (no PDFs, especially).

Works best with EPUB, as I believe other formats will actually have to be wirelessly sent to calibre for analysis -- it would be faster to resend them.
Resending shouldn't be a problem though. It's just Yet Another AFK.

You will be thankful for CC once everything is properly in the database. Regardless of how it gets there. Don't confuse the job with the setup.

Noted. But Calibre does deposit metadata on the card. I was hoping CC would see and use it.

Fine by me. When I started using Calibre to manage things, I rapidly discovered it was best to let it do its job, and I abandoned the storage hierarchy I had in place on the card and let Calibre place things as it wished. Calibre maintains it, and FBReaderJ can find things in Calibre's organization.

There are in fact PDFs, but everything is in a Calibre maintained database on my main machine, and sent to my Android tablet from Calibre via USB.

By preference, I get ePub. But I have a fair number of Mobi files, and a batch of stuff only available in PDF. One reason for using FBReaderJ is that it can display all three, and I mostly don't have to care what format a book is in..

I don't. But getting the setup to where it can do the job is a necessary first step.

This discussion may be of interest; sadly, it isn't there yet.

No mention of using metadata.calibre, though.

OK, so that is not as good as it could be. But if all the books are properly cataloged in metadata.calibre, I would connect via USB, tag all books on the device, the delete them from Device View. Check that nothing miscellaneous is left on the device, and unplug+reconnect as a CC device. Send all tagged books.

Alternatively, have CC analyze the books, but be warned that it may take a lot longer, plus PDFs may not get matched, depending. (Also, plugboard use may cause mismatches.) On the plus side, it only costs AFK time, and apps will still see the same files so you save place/annotations info.

Also, one nice thing about CC is that you don't have to worry about format, AND you can use different apps for formats. You can use the best viewer for each format, and CC will handle it all.
