Suggestions for buying a new Fire

Paying the $$$ to remove the ads only removes them from the lock screen. Amazon has no control over ads popping up inside an app. That control rests with the app developer/owner.

Oh, I know that. I was just thinking about why people would pay to remove the ads. If I had bought my HDX directly from Amazon, I probably would have paid to remove the ads, thinking that I'd prefer to look at wallpapers rather than an ad. But because I got the HDX via QVC's "Today's Special Value", it came with the ads so I had no choice in the matter, and I've realized that they're okay.

Right NOW, they are very conveniently easy to ignore, but they can go wherever they want with SO and I don't want to be apart of it. I'll gladly let them have the extra money in exchange for not bugging me about other products and services.

I already get the MP3 newsletter every week to begin with anyway. E-mail newsletters and the very few websites I visit with curated ads, is literally the ONLY type of advertising I expose myself to, and I like it that way.

You know, the last Paperwhite that I purchased was not subscribed to ads but I just bought the regular old Paperwhite WITH ads... but for some reason Amazon thought I was NOT subscribed to the ads.

Maybe some sort of beautiful server error?

If you go to Amazon, then Manage Your Content and Devices, then click the Devices tab, and then choose the tablet or e-reader and you will see if it is subscribed to the ads or not. For some reason, my PW was not, even on this page. Weird.

OMG, you're right. It says Unsubscribed! Cool. Since I don't use an auto/on/off cover, I don't have to see the ads!

The two for my daughters don't show up yet, though one is supposed to be delivered a week from today.

Heck, no. The main reason I bought the large Nook HD+ was for him. The only time he's tried to use it was when he took it to the beach, and then he was trying to get something through the web, instead of the app, and whined because it didn't work. He won't use a tablet.

He does like the Chromebook I got him.

Oh and we are six....my oldest son, 17, has no interest in a tablet. My other son, 14, has a 2012 Fire HD running n2a Kitkat, which he loves, and a Chromebook (not his, but he uses it daily). He probably doesn't need a Fire 6

I have a Chromebook and the 2012 Fire HD 7. The Chromebook is nice for casual use. I put my Fire in one of those Amazon cases to keep the overall size thin. I use it as a media player; primarily music and audiobooks. Right now it's playing Christmas music (Carpenters Holiday channel on Pandora).

It's not that I have a problem with ads per se, but on my Kindle Touch I have the screensavers hack set to display my current book's cover. Can't do that with ads enabled.
