Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:
Pigman's Fingers by award-winning South African expat playwright Ian Fraser (Wikipedia), a horror-ish short which he says was published in The Utopian literary magazine. A young boy struggles to make sense of the nightmarish world he inhabits, alone with his mother in the remains of what was once America. A post-apocalyptic Gothic tale, in the tradition of classics like 'Riddley Walker' and 'Lord of the Flies.' |

Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:
Long Train to the Redeeming Sin: Stories about African Women by Sudanese-American writer Kola Boof (who had a now-deleted Wikipedia article). This is a collection of poetry and literary fiction short stories about African women from mythology to historical times to present day, according to one of the customer reviews (the actual blurb is short on description and high on quoted praise from the New York Times), originally out from small press Door of Kush in 2001. A perennial favorite of Black women throughout the diaspora, this collection containing the classics "Day of Vow", "Boy Magic", "Black America Diva Girl" and "The Magic Wand" and MUCH MORE is a must-read for any woman of any race. LONG TRAIN TO THE REDEEMING SIN: STORIES ABOUT AFRICAN WOMEN is a book you'll find yourself reading over and over again. |

I wasn't clear where to post this, Grimm's tales not really being suitable for children?
The Original 1812 Grimm Fairy Tales: A New Translation of the 1812 First Edition Kinder und Hausmärchen Childrens and Household Tales (1812 Childrens and Household Tales Kinder und Hausmärchen) by Oliver Loo The Tales were first published in 1812 and many times after that. Each time the stories were added to and expanded, or even completely changed or deleted by the Grimms themselves. In English translations, translators further changed, mistranslated, censored, added and/or removed text ... There are 34 stories in the original 1812 edition that never appear in any of the later editions. Most of what English speaking people today are familiar with are the stories as they were in the final version of the stories as published in 1857 In the 1812 first edition of the tales, the Grimms also included an extensive 60 page appendix which discussed the oral and literary sources of the tales Free http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MMX1Z5W/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MMX1Z5W/ http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00MMX1Z5W/ |

Bargain @ $1.99 from small publisher Pushkin Press (couponable @ Kobo, price good for Canada & US, may be price-matched in other stores/regions):
Letter from an Unknown Woman and Other Stories by the late Stefan Zweig (Wikipedia), a major old school Austrian literature figure (I have two copies on DVD of a French-language film that was adapted from one of his short stories), newly translated by Anthea Bell (Wikipedia) who if you read the Adventures of Asterix, is one half of the translating team along with Derek Hockridge, and does truly excellent work on those. I will be picking this one up myself. ETA: It turns out that there's a nicer (but pricier) collection which contains these stories and more, see this post downthread for details. These four Stefan Zweig stories newly translated by the award-winning Anthea Bell, are among his most celebrated and compelling work. The titular tale is a devastating depiction of unrequited love, which inspired a classic Hollywood film, directed by Max Ophüls and starring Joane Fontaine. Elsewhere in the collection, a young man mistakes the girl he loves for her sister, two erstwhile lovers meet after an age spent apart, and a married woman repays a debt of gratitude to her childhood sweetheart. Expertly paced, laced with the acutely accurate psychological detail and empathy that are Zweig's trademarks, this is a powerful addition to Pushkin's growing collection of his work. Last edited by ATDrake; 11-04-2014 at 01:37 AM. Reason: But if you've never read Zweig before, this is still a pretty decent low-cost intro to his stuff when combined with coupon. |

Give Your Email Address, Get on a Mailing List, Get a Free Ebook
You can get a free ebook if you join an email newsletter mailing list.
The name of the newsletter is "Off the Shelf." I'll quote part of their blurb about it: "Off the Shelf is a site and newsletter created by passionate editors, authors, and others inside the book business to help you discover—or rediscover—great books." I think that I actually might be on the mailing list, I don't remember. Here's the "fine print": Offer valid for new subscribers only and expires 12/31/14 While supplies last. Open only to legal residents of the United States. Program may be terminated at any time, and titles may be removed or replaced at any time." You get your choice of six different ebooks. Off the Shelf is apparently connected with Simon & Schuster, so I'm going out on a limb and guessing that all of the ebook selections are S&S titles. haha I didn't see anything on the webpage for this promo about what format that the ebooks are in. Here are the current ebook selections from which you will choose your free ebook: - In the Shadow of the Banyan. By Vaddey Ratner. - Siege: Who Will Survive? By Simon Kernick. - This Side of Paradise. By F. Scott Fitzgerald. - Little Earthquakes. By Jennifer Weiner. - Wishes. By Jude Deveraux. - The Lions of Lucerne. By Brad Thor. Once again we non-fiction only readers get kicked to the curb, as all of these titles are fiction. Being a non-fiction only reader, I don't know anything about these titles good, bad, or indifferent. Well, except the name "F. Scott Fitzgerald." I might have heard of it. haha Oh, I was about to forget to give you the linky. haha It's http://offtheshelf.com/free-ebook. |

The Collected Stories of Stefan Zweig by the late Stefan Zweig, translated by Anthea Bell, also out from Steerforth's Pushkin Press imprint. This contains 20+ of his stories, including the ones in LFAUW&OS, and amortizes to a much better price point even at $8.87 CAD from Amazon, or $10.09 CAD from Kobo, where it's couponable (I was wondering what I was going to use that SAV50 code on). In this magnificent collection of Stefan Zweig's short stories the very best and worst of human nature are captured with sharp observation, understanding and vivid empathy. Ranging from love and death to faith restored and hope regained, these stories present a master at work, at the top of his form. Perfectly paced and brimming with passion, these twenty-two tales from a master storyteller of the Twentieth Century are translated by the award-winning Anthea Bell. Bargain @ $1.99 (couponable @ Kobo) also from Steerforth's Zoland Books imprint: The Conformist by the late Alberto Moravia (Wikipedia), an old-school Italian literature figure. This vintage 1951 anti-fascist literary novel was the basis of the eponymous 1970 film (Wikipedia) by major Italian film director Bernardo Bertolucci (Wikipedia, you may know him best from The Last Emperor, of which there is an excellent Criterion Collection edition), and which won a lot of film festival awards back in the day. This is another one I think I'll be picking up. Secrecy and Silence are second nature to Marcello Clerici, the hero of The Conformist, a book which made Alberto Moravia one of the world's most read postwar writers. Clerici is a man with everything under control - a wife who loves him, colleagues who respect him, the hidden power that comes with his secret work for the Italian political police during the Mussolini years. But then he is assigned to kill his former professor, now in exile, to demonstrate his loyalty to the Fascist state, and falls in love with a strange, compelling woman; his life is torn open - and with it the corrupt heart of Fascism. Moravia equates the rise of Italian Fascism with the psychological needs of his protagonist for whom conformity becomes an obsession in a life that has included parental neglect, an oddly self-conscious desire to engage in cruel acts, and a type of male beauty which, to Clerici's great distress, other men find attractive.
