I've posted this on other threads but this is my Kobo Aura H20 vs hubby's PW2. The H20 is cream/Ivory and the PW2 is blue white

Or a VASTLY SUPERIOR method would be to use Adaptive Design guidelines that tailor the site design and resources to the device being used. Think SquareSpace.

Or this could be the past getting revenge on the future. I remember how many inept idiot website designers there were back in the dial-up days who just could not get their dramatically limited number of inadequate brain cells to understand that a multi-megabyte image is going to take AGES to pull down on a 56Kbps modem. (And make the rendering of the entire page horrible as a result. God, those image container frames were a curse, and when they broke due to a timeout... Lord In Heaven!)

Mine was supposed to arrive next week. I got an email that says it has been shipped. When I check, I'm told it will arrive TOMORROW via USPS! (Most likely sometime in the afternoon, since that's when the guy delivers.)

I'm excited, but also worried. For 200 bucks, it better be right or I'm going to return it for a refund... and maybe get a PW. (Or... maybe wait a year, for them to sort out their issues. ???) Bottom line: I want it to be right! I want to keep this thing, and I want it to be a great e-reader! Get it right, Amazon... PLEASE get it right!

A couple of fixes for the screen issue have been reported on the Amazon Kindle forum.

1) Restart NOT Factory Reset fixed one. If it were me I'd try both if I had the issue.
2)"I first tried the night light feature this morning by climbing in and out of a closet until I realized that smudge I kept trying to wipe off on the top left corner was the light sensor. I noticed as the light adjusted the screen yellowed from the top to about 1/2 way down. After playing with it for awhile by sitting in a brightly lit room and repeatedly covering the sensor until the entire screen darkened to a uniform color(yellowish), it now is uniformly light when I uncover the light sensor. Maybe this will work for those of you having a problem."

Hope this helps someone!

Can you post where you read this? Tried this with my 3 Kindle Voyages. No difference. I'm really not sure how this would even be possible, anyway..

Nameless Being

Mine just arrived. So this is very preliminary. But I did notice a few things straight away:
  • While it was starting up the first time and the dark image covers the lower half of the screen, I noticed a gillion pinholes. But they don't seem noticeable when reading text.
  • Also while it was starting up the first time I angled the Voyage and could see the reflection of six LEDs at the bottom. I could not see any at the top or sides.
  • As soon as the screen was on I could see the large oval shaped yellowish blob taking up the top third of the screen. The Voyage started at light setting 22 and so the blob was quite noticeable but not a deal killer yet. However I never read at level 22. I turned the light down to level 10 in my well lit study and the blob is barely noticeable.
  • For the third lit Kindle in a row the screen has a definite blue tint. Yuk! But not as noticeable at lower light levels. I can also see pink and yellow when the light level is too high for me to read, say around 22.
  • Text is definitely sharper and crisper and much easier to read. This is a major improvement over the PW2.

I just got it so I will check it out much more thoroughly over the next few days. Unfortunately I won't be able to spend much time with it until this evening, but so far it looks better than the PW2. I'm a bit upset with the yellow blob on $200 reader, but so far it looks like that won't effect my reading too much.

ETA: Wow it is small! I always loved the 5" Sony PRS-300 and PRS-350 readers I had years ago because they were so small. I think the Voyage is as small as them, if not a little bit smaller, and it has a 6" screen rather than the 5" screens they had.

First fix above should be "Restart" NOT "Factory Reset". The OP posted restart the 2nd time and I asked them to clarify. Sorry for any confusion. If it were me I'd try both if I had the issue.

While I prefer the lighting of the Kindle in your comparison, I find both to be very acceptable!

I just read all 14 pages of this thread. If I get a good Voyage, I will immediately go out and buy a lottery ticket.

Frankly, I'm not quite sure what to think yet about the display issues.

It's a real issue, and I'm willing to bet that all of them suffer from it to potentially varying degrees. Those who say they don't notice it, as I mentioned earlier in the thread, are either not as picky (by choice or otherwise), or are sitting outside where the backlight irregularities are not visible.

I know I'll get yelled at, "Don't tell me what I can or can't see, - my Voyage is perfect!", I'll just say - "Prove it!"

It's pretty easy to take a picture of a Voyage with your phone, at a reasonable backlight level - and post it on here. Pictures outside or under super-bright lights aren't helpful, fyi.

Unless we make noise about this, the issue will never be fixed! How many years has this non-uniformity issue been going on for now?

Thanks, for posting these suggestions! I had done a reset as well as a restart yesterday before calling customer service. I just tried covering the light sensor (off and on several times). No joy with either approach... but it was worth a try!

The official amazon kindle forum is talking about it.

I also notice it on my first paperwhite, first lit is always fine, not even the shadows at the bottom, but once is done, the third light shows the flaws... why?

My guess is that the backlight angle may have been slightly off. My auto brightness also wasn't working so returned it.

The uneven backlighting was a real problem in landscape mode (horizontal) which I prefer. Turn buttons also don't work in landscape. If I read in portrait mode the uneven lighting wouldn't bother me.

The text appeared sharp. I'll look forward to what others report who have been using the PW2.

For those wondering the differences between the 3 Kindle Voyage units I have opened (I refuse to open the 4th one...). The one on the right is indeed the coolest color temperature of the three, but all three suffer the same issue in the same places.

Brightness set to 13.
