![]() Ken please, DON'T INSIST. If you want, open a new thread about "Koreader is wonderful versus stock firmware". But here, your insistent comments are FULLY OFF-TOPIC. We all have learnt that Koreader is wonderful... One post is enough. Two, three or more are just too many. We just want the stock firmware FIXED, no matter how good Koreader is. And we are just trying to post replicable test cases. |

Hey arspr, been a little busy lately. I'll give your rebooting PDF a try tonight.
As for a free PDF that has the slow behaviour... haven't found one yet, but also been too busy to look properly. I have some ideas though. |

I can't open this in Firefox's JS PDF reader or in Okular. It's a password protected PDF. That's probably what's giving the Kobo RMSDK install fits. For the record, I reproduced your reboot. The search for a good test PDF continues... |

Just re-tested both pdf issues with 3.11.0:
+ Canon EOS 7D pdf: The same crash and reboot. + Your grimoire pdf (I've redownloaded it from the dropbox link you PMed me, it is still alive): I think it's even worse, it is so slow, my HD really seems bricked... |

I just downloaded that Canon EOS 7D manual. My browser (Chrome) will open it correctly, however, my PDF reader of choice (Nitro PDF Reader) will NOT open it claiming a password is required.
I *think* this could well be related to why Kobo has a problem viewing this particular file. |

Yes, that was also hinted by ottdmk... But in either case it is a clear bug in kobo software...
EDITED: I've opened ottdmk's pdf and Canon one in Adobe Reader XI and both are password protected for certain areas. I upload two screenshots, they are in Spanish but I suppose you'll easily understand/translate them. Nevertheless the key differences:
If I get across some other conflictive pdf I'll check its protection properties. Last edited by arspr; 10-21-2014 at 02:45 PM. Reason: ¿More info? |

Nope, the password protection at least in 7.0 flavour doesn't seem to be the culprit to either problems:
This pdf: http://www.hec.usace.army.mil/softwa..._Guide_4.0.pdf which has this protection settings (look at the screenshot), works perfectly fine. |

Can we now move onto the PDF performance of the 3.11 firmware?

This is the same thread... (Look at the 4th post above you). Maybe an administrator should rename its title.
As the problems are exactly the same in 3.8 and in 3.11 (at least, possibly older FWs would be affected too), there's no point in starting a new thread IMO. |

Because of davidfor's post in 3.11 FW thread, and my recent HD death and H2O birth, I've retested pdf performance (ottdmk's Dropbox link is alive) and Canon's pdf crash.
Everything continues like always. More over I've tested Davidfor's soundbar manual but it's nowhere near to the Shadowrun pdf. In davidfor's manual I get about 5-6s at most, while in the ottdmk's pdf I get about 8-9 s at best and sometimes page turn times go up to 20 s. And again, even that slowness is not really important but the first videos ottdmk posted, where you can see how old FWs were much faster... |

I was looking at the Canon manual and tried the experiment of printing it to a print to PDF file utility. The file that was created had a couple of the restrictions removed and stated it could be opened with any version of Acrobat. Copied the file to my Kobo H2O and it opened happily, page turn times were in the 2 second range. The home page even showed the first page as the cover in contrast to the original which showed a blank page.

I've never been able to understand how this kind of protections CAN work... If I can access the content then I can access the content, how can you prevent me about doing whatever I want with it? And if it is encrypted and I cannot access it, then I cannot access it, so how can I render and display it? ![]() ![]() ![]() Nevertheless, it would be great if someone with full fledged Acrobat could generate a sample pdf enabling this feature... |

As for the value of the restriction flags, there aren't that many bits of software that can be used to edit PDF files so most people are using Adobe's Acrobat which does respect the restrictions. At work, we do generate quite a few PDF's that are flagged as not printable by Adobe's or compatible software and others that allow form filling. A PDF file can have two passwords set, one is the owner password which is used to enable/disable restrictions, the other is an user password which is needed to open the file for any purpose. Then you can get into the PDF compatibility settings in Acrobat -- I tend to prefer Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5) just to make the file readable on as many systems as possible while keeping some advanced features.
