Does anyone else carry their e-reader in their jacket pocket? Really handy for me to do that when I'm walking or commuting (easy access) - but I don't think it would actually fit if it had a cover on.

I've read about people having a naked Reader in a pocket and the Reader getting bashed and broken. It's not safe to carry it in a pocket naked. In fact, it's less safe to carry a Reader in a pocket case or not as it has a greater chance of getting bashed then it does it you carry your Reader in a bag of some kind. When I take my Reader out of the house, I use a bag to carry it in and it's even better protected then just the case.

I was feeling daring today. I went out with no cover today. I had it in my coat pocket. And I had it in back pants pocket also. And...

It is fine!

And don't forget, a reader without a cover will be easier on your back since it is lighter.

If a Reader with a cover bothers your back, then you seriously need to go see a doctor because you have a bad back.

The doctor will probably need to prescribe a cover for your spine.

Here I actually agree with JSWolf. Although I wouldn't say that it "getting bashed" is the biggest danger here - the problem with pockets is if you forget you have it in one and sit down.

I totally did not destroy my very first reader like 2 days after I got it that way.

I hear the origami spine covers are especially trendy now, since they allow people to comfortably lean back in backless chairs.

I carry my PW in an interior vest pocket, occasionally in a rear jeans pocket. I never felt it needed a cover, the screen seems pretty scratch resistant, two years and counting. Much easier to slide into a pocket without a cover, though before my PW I packed a Kindle Touch w/cover in there. It was significantly heavier though.
