Everyone here who goes tot he site to get the free eBook should either leave a comment if possible or email the author if possible and let him know we want a convertible reflowable format such as MS Reader or Mobipocket. Then we'd be happy. PDF for a text based eBook is not a good idea no matter how easy it is to make.

Because publishers probably know that most prople do not like to read novels in PDF form and expect that many people will download the PDF, read a chapter or two, give up and buy the pbook.

Alternatively, because the publishers and authors are clueless, and have fallen for Adobe's sales pitch of the PDF being the one universal format, translating universal as meaning "the everything for every conceivable use."
