Hmm... I even looked at the fifth imperium but it doesn't seem to be on any of the Baen CDs. Oh well, at least I did find all the Honor Harrington books there, which I have been meaning to read.

Baen seem to have two different categories of "unavailable" books: some can continue to be downloaded by previous purchasers ("Thrice Upon a Time" falls into this category), while others can no longer be downloaded, even if you have previously purchased them. That's why, I always, always, make sure that I download the books that I buy: you just can't assume that the bookstore will make them available to you indefinitely.

October's usually my big horror-media month, but not this year. I finished Unidentified Funny Objects a while back, and am about a quarter of the way through UFO2 now with UFO3 in the pipeline. Writing and plotting have taken up a lot of what would normally be my reading/watching time.

I did watch season two of Holliston, though, and that's close enough. (It's a sitcom about two guys who want to make horror movies, made by...two guys who make horror movies. Well worth watching, if that's your genre. LOTS of in-jokes and genre guest stars.) I've also got Skeleton Crew loaded, as I'm about due for a reread. Then again, I've preordered The Dark Half on Blu-ray, and I could stand (no, sit) to watch Storm of the Century again...

While that's always good advice, I'm curious now. Can you give me an example of one of the books in that latter category?

Sure: "Demon Blade" by Mark A. Garland and Charles C. McGraw:

http://www.baenebooks.com/p-102-demon-blade.aspx

I bought this many years ago, but I can no longer download it. Fortunately I had it in LIT format, which Calibre does a decent job of converting to Mobi/ePub.

It is sad that in 2014 there is a book I want to read, and I can't BUY it as an ebook if I wanted to. All I can do is get used paperbacks.

Oh well, plenty of books in the sea.

It turned out to have such bad formatting that I (re-)read One Corpse Too Many by Ellis Peters instead. A splendid second novel in her Cadfael series.

And now I've done an ePub to ePub conversion, and the formatting's a lot better, so back to Turncoat. (Which I bought on 6 October 2012, just over two years ago, from Fictionwise for $1.36.)

I have this one as well; bought at Fictionwise on Oct 7, 2012 for $1.60 (along with Loot, my other Elkins standalone). Still waiting to be read ...

I just finished reading The Gauguin Connection by Estelle Ryan. A friend strongly recommended the series to me, and since this first book is free at Amazon, I was happy to pick it up. I didn't wait to read it and now I'm adding the other books in the series to my Wish List. (I'm on a book-buying moratorium this year.) Maybe my family will give them to me for Christmas.

Genevieve Lenard is a brilliant behavioral scientist who is living with high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder. A specialist in non-verbal communication, Genevieve works for an exclusive insurance agency in France. Her boss has provided a safe and sheltered workspace and in turn, she provides analysis of video interviews and spots patterns in data -- saving the insurance company many millions of Euros. Now she's being asked to assist in solving the disappearance of weapons from a military cache. The mystery is good, and Genevieve's insights into her own behavior are very well written. I strongly recommend this book.

Sounds good, especially after completing the enjoyable Chris Norgren series (by Aaron Elkins) that is set in the European art world (and a bit in San Francisco). This series sounds grittier, though. I picked up the free book and I'll be blaming you if I end up buying the other books in the series
