Just finished "Thrice Upon a Time" by James P. Hogan, originally bought from Baen in November 2000. Excellent Hard SF with the theme of communication through time, and the paradoxes inherent in that.

Baen description:

Quote:
It's amazing enough when Murdoch Ross's brilliant grandfather invents a machine that can send messages to itself in the past or the future. But when signals begin to arrive without being sent, Murdoch realizes that every action he takes changes the future that would have been . . . and that the world he lives in has already been altered!

Then a new message arrives from the future: The world is doomed!
Very, very highly recommended, but be warned that is it quite "technical" in parts.

I'm again in a bit of a reading slump. Finished The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan the other day, and ... eh, all I can say is "I'm glad this series is over now".

I enjoyed the original Percy Jackson series a great deal, and still liked bits of the sequel series well enough, but to me, the format just became stale over what was basically a ten book series.

Not really sure what to read next. I finally bought Kelley Armstrong's Visions recently, so perhaps that one; I liked Omens quite a bit, so perhaps this might be the one to break the stretch of "meh"...

Wow sounds good. amazon doesn't have an ebook of this. Is it in the baen free library? If so, can you send me a copy? If not, I guess it can be bought from Baen?

Sadly, this ebook is no longer available from Baen. I would guess that there are rights issues.

I'm hopeful, especially as I have books 2-10 in the series I picked up at Fictionwise. IIRC I got the first book for free at Amazon sometime ago but I can't find it in my Calibre library right now

Some progress already made towards this goal: The Silkworm by J K Rowling/Robert Galbraith, Return to Me by Robin Lee Hatcher, and True Courage by Dee Henderson; all good reads for me.

I plan to tackle An Infamous Army (by Georgette Heyer) next; I say "tackle" because I have a strong premonition I won't like this one much.

Finished Ghost Ship and Dragon Ship, and several stories in A Liaden Universe Constellation Volume One, now reading a few more in A Liaden Universe Constellation Volume Two while I wait for the eARC of Carousel Seas which should be available in the next day or so. Then it will be back to finsh off the current books in the Ava Lee series, with The Scottish Banker of Surabaya before my BC Library loan expires.

An entertaining set of stories and a very interesting fact article. A good issue.

Next: The Fire Rose by Mercedes Lackey. From a backlog of Baen books I bought from Kobo in August when there was a good coupon.

I finished MR-favourite The Martian by Andy Weir a couple of days ago. I enjoyed it, but maybe not as much as some people round here.

Now I'm reading City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett, which I like a lot so far. It's a fantasy spy thriller. The tech level is unusually high for a secondary-world fantasy - with trains, gas lighting, some cars and limited firearms - but magic is definitely real, and gods definitely did walk the earth until quite recently. It's about a diplomat investigating a murder, with some complications and a great sidekick. I'm coming up to half way through and looking forward to finding out what happens next.

This last month or so my reading has slowed to a crawl. Lat night I finally finished Saint Peter's Fair. the fourth book in the Chronicles of Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters (pseudonym of Edith Pargeter). It was highly entertaining and even educational in its own gentle way. That it took so long to finish is no reflection on the book's quality; I just haven't been able to concentrate as well as I normally do this past month.

About an inch above your right ear; smack yourself with the open palm of your hand. That helps me concentrate.

I read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and then Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. The novel was excellent; the original short story was ok but not great. Maybe if I had read them the other way around I would have appreciated the short story more, but I am not convinced. We weren't able to get as intimate a look at Ender's motivations in the short story and that is what really made the novel so excellent.

I did start The Man Who Would Be King for the book club this morning as well. So far, so good.

I just finished the Scepter'd Isle series and liked it enough that I'll probably read it again.

Now I'm sifting through my stack of unread indy stuff for something that looks interesting.

Strange, the book is listed at Baen for $4.00 and even shows six sample chapters, but the full book is not available for purchase.

That would be why I said "no longer available" from them; it used to be, but ain't now. It's still on the site to support those who purchased it, so they can re-download it if they need to.
