Karl May: Werke

Doing something for those among us speaking and reading German.

I am working on the first volume of Karl May's works. All in all he has written about 50 novels and is hugely popular in Germany. Some might know his Winnetou trilogy, for example. Well, there is lots more!

Anyway, I want to try and edit and offer all that is available by this author (on german Gutenberg for example) in proper prc and lrf format (I think that has not be done before, at least not for free).

As I do have a lot of time, I think I will be able to publish about one volume per week (actually I did a bit more this week )

Thumbs up Webster, Noah: Webster's Dictionary 1913 (updated)

Updated my previous EBW1150/REB1200 .imp versions as well as added an updated .prc version, new Sony PRS-505 .epub version and going back to the original source, a .rb version.

Now that's a lot of (old) words....

Bonsels - Himmelsvolk (german)

I am working on this fabulous children book cum fantasy tale cum social satire. It is available on PG but also on a children's site (with illustrations) and I want to put together an illustrated book for prc and Sony. I have given up on epub right now because the results are just not good enough for me.

BTW: This is post 100 for me!

Dickens - Little Dorrit

Inspired by the BBC's current showing of a superb dramatisation of Charles Dickens' "Little Dorrit", I've spent the last couple of weeks thoroughly proofreading my earlier version of the book against a printed edition. As a result, I've found and corrected many hundreds of errors, and uploaded a new version for both Sony Reader and MobiPocket.

Enjoy!

Dickens - Nicholas Nickleby

I'm in "proof-reading mode" at present, hence the lack of new uploads from me .

Spend the last week or so thoroughly proofing Dickens' "Nicholas Nickleby" against a printed edition. Found and corrected a few hundred minor errors as a result. The book is now, I think, in a pretty good state.

Uploaded a new v6 for both Sony and MobiPocket.

I'm a newbie, working on a short story

by Poul Anderson entitled "The Man Who Came Early" that I picked up on manybooks.net. It's an excellent story set in Iceland at the time of the sagas (around 1000 A.D.), but the Kindle version has more typos than one would like--I'm trying to see if I can do better.

I'm very new at this and am working on a Mac (using Stanza to convert to Word format).

UPDATE: well, it turns out that two separate source texts I can find have similar typos. Most I'm pretty sure about fixing, but, just to be safe as well as complete, I found a used copy of the original collection in hardcover on Amazon and ordered it (it's from 1957--amazing, huh?).

You do not have to post the doc. We can take just the mobi and convert that to really good Sony and Imp books.

I just uploaded book 100 in my short posting time on MR, btw(under a month)

In more important news, I will try to be a little more organised nexth month and do authors and/or series:

I will do a series of pulp crime mysteries by Harlan Page Halsey aka Old Sleuth (there are 6 books on PG). Just would like to know if you think I should make a collection of those or do separate books? They are only loosely connected.

Then I will upload some more William Le Queux-books (the inventor of the spy thriller). There are 8 more thrillers on PG (apart from the Stretton Street Affair that I posted this month already).

I will definitely do some Harry Collingwood, also and maybe more Ballantine if there is still time for him.

On the "Western" front, there are a LOT more Bower books waiting and I'll add some Hamlin Garland to the lot.

In German, I'll continue with my Karl May complete edition (some 50 or so books to go) and try to throw in some other goodies I find on the way (apart from some Sigmund Freud and Franz Kafka stuff not too specific yet)

In French, I will absolutely finish the Assolant books I have begun with and some Gaboriau stuff not on ebooksgratuits (those people do really good conversions, so no point in doing the same work again).

Okay, should keep me till X-Mas (with a few extras inbetween) I'll post my plans for January around that time.

I have had the most frustrating weekend working on The Caravaners [sic] by Elizabeth von Arnim.
I went to The Internet Archive, because it's only available as scans. The first version I downloaded only contained alternate pages (--it originated from Google, apparently).
I sighed, but did not repine. There was a second version. So I downloaded that and started work on it. Six hours later, I discovered that about 80 pages were missing from the middle of the book. This was very annoying.
I returned to The Internet Archive and found a third version. It was complete but had drawbacks. There were more OCR errors and it was an American edition. But I found the missing pages, got the spelling consistent, and reformatted extensively, and have finally managed to upload a copy, after more hours than I care to count.
After all that, I've only freed about an inch of shelf-space. (The paper copy is going to charity.) But it is a surprisingly good read and I hope that someone else will like it too.

I have also been cleaning out shelf space. My wife and I just filled several large bags (~1.7 cubic feet each) of books to take to Walter Reed Hospital for returning veterans. This is our new place to donate books. All my local library does with them is put them in a "free" pile for the paperbound or in a book sale for the hardbound. The senior center here will only take books in large print and they only want current best sellers.

The people at Walter Reed said that if it was of interest to us to acquire the book, then there is someone there that will also be interested in the book. Their view is so refreshing. They also allow the returning veterans to take the book with them if they want or if they are transferred/discharged before they finish it. I like these people.

In other areas, I have more Jack London to post and I am working on a copy of Practical Journalism by Edwin L. Shuman from 1903. I read it many years ago and it is a good solid book. The scan I have of the book is in poor shape and I am correcting the OCR at the moment. Some passages have had to be typed from the text as this was easier than correction.
