Seems like these reviewers arbitrarily subtract points from a product simply because it's not a Kindle. In my opinion, the only time Kindle clearly emerges as the winner is if someone is already locked into the Amazon "ecosystem". Otherwise, I think other readers offer better value for the money.

The review mentions that the H2O doesn't have hyphenation unlike all other Kobo devices. Can anyone confirm this? I hope it still works for English books. If not, what a bummer, hyphenation was one of the reasons I ordered it over the Voyage.

They tested firmware version 3.7.0. So that really doesn't count. The current firmware is 3.8.0.

It does count. It's a review. People will read it and decide not to buy it because it doesn't do hyphenation.

I know that I wouldn't knowingly buy an eReader that didn't do hyphenation. And what does it say about Kobo that they would send H2Os to reviewers that don't perform on of the most basic of eReader tasks?

As far as I can tell, the hyphenation works the same as the Aura and Aura HD using 3.8.0 reading about 35 books. This is using English. I have exactly one German language book and couldn't tell you if it was hyphenating properly or not though I can say it did hyphenate at what I thought were odd spots when I opened it just now.

I only read a couple of books before updating to 3.8.0 from 3.7.0 but 3.7.0 also hyphenated.

As it turned out in the separate hyphenation thread, the H2O indeed does not do hyphenation out of the box. Firmware versions later than 3.3.1 do not include hyphenation dictionaries. They can be manually added but for the vast majority of users, hyphenation will not exist. Another random bug or an intentional move?

In reply to DNSB: a random bug most likely if it does work for some.

The H2O might still hyphenate even if the hyphenation dictionaries are missing, but without the dictionaries it won't know the best places to split the words, so the results might not be ideal.

I'm wondering if the different results are caused by the RMSDK renderer (epub) and ACCESS renderer (.kepub.epub) handling hyphenation differently?

Further note: part of the patching I do—and had forgotten about—is to copy the hyphenation dictionaries that were supplied in 3.3.1 to the current firmware when I apply the various patches (Metazoa/GeoffR) created. I'll have to remove them and see what happens.

This seems to be what I see on my Aura HD. It hyphenates words, usually in a natural spot, but every once in a while the hyphenation occurs in stange spot. (for example: confide-nce). Doesn't bother me too much, but I do notice it.

Edited to add: These are in self-made kepubs transferred to my Aura HD from Calibre with the KoboTouch Extended Plugin.

Probably not, both engines use the same hyphenation dictionaries.

Spoiler:

Yes, you can copy these stock dictionaries manually for previous firmware releases, they are part of RMSDK and in "Adobe format" / Libre Office or Open Office format:
Adobe
Code:
UTF-8
LEFTHYPHENMIN 5
RIGHTHYPHENMIN 5
% ADOBE CONFIDENTIAL
% ___________________

%
% Version 1.0.1 August 23 2010

Open Office / Libre Office
Code:
UTF-8
LEFTHYPHENMIN 2
RIGHTHYPHENMIN 3
COMPOUNDLEFTHYPHENMIN 2
COMPOUNDRIGHTHYPHENMIN 3
Hyphenation only works with a dictionary and a link file.
Hyphenation dictionaries are stored in
Code:
KoboRoot.tgz\KoboRoot.tar\.\usr\local\Kobo\hyphenDicts\
This location is (now) empty. Hyphenation dictionaries must be installed manually to this location.

Link files, are stored in
Code:
\KoboRoot.tgz\KoboRoot.tar\.\usr\share\hyphen\
which links to /usr/local/Kobo/hyphenDicts/, i.e.: /usr/local/Kobo/hyphenDicts/hyph_nl.dic, or /usr/local/Kobo/hyphenDicts/hyph_it.dic
Default link files:
German: de_DE
English: en_US
Spanish: es_ES
French: fr_FR
Italian: it_IT
Dutch: nl_NL (new)
Portugese: pt_PT

The easiest way to install the stock hyphenation dictionaries is to make a copy of previous firmware release.
Open the (copy) firmware file (KoboRoot.tgz) with 7-Zip and delete almost everything in it. You should only keep these locations and files:
Code:
\KoboRoot.tgz\KoboRoot.tar\.\usr\share\hyphen\
\KoboRoot.tgz\KoboRoot.tar\.\usr\local\Kobo\hyphenDicts\
And save the modified firmware file.

To install dictionaries for other languages, i.e. Hungarian
Code: hu-HU
Find a Open Office / Libre Office dictionary file (use Google) and add the hyphenation file to
Code:
KoboRoot.tgz\KoboRoot.tar\.\usr\local\Kobo\hyphenDicts\
Add the link file (hyph_hu_HU.dic) to
Code:
KoboRoot.tgz\KoboRoot.tar\.\usr\share\hyphen\
(the link file contains this line: /usr/local/Kobo/hyphenDicts/hyph_hu.dic), which links to the previous installed Hungarian dictionary file (hyph_hu.dic).

Hyphenation can be made more or less agressive by adjusting the values of
Code:
LEFTHYPHENMIN 5
RIGHTHYPHENMIN 5
A higher value is less agressive, a lower value more agressive.
If you use Microsoft Windows to edit these files you might need Notepad++ or a similar editor.
Files must be saved in Unix format EOL and as UT8 w/o BOM.

I tested both, 3.7.0 and 3.8.0.

3.7.0 is the official firmware whough, so I went with that for the whole review. For the hyphenation issue it doesn't matter anyways. It's now present in both firmwares.

No, the "current firmware" is 3.7.0. That is the firmware supplied with the H2O.

What if these lines are removed entirely? Will it even hyphenate single characters?
