So... none of you have tried the Koreader alternative reader program?

Wow!!! I can replicate the issue with this pdf. It is extremely slow. And it is not a specially heavy file.

You should contact other power users like davidfor or PeterT because something strange is happening here.

(I remind you that I have quite heavy pdfs and they work quite "fast". Well not quite fast, but not so slow. Something inside this file is causing havoc to the reader software).

Now we know that some pdfs do not work fine.

I just wanted to apologize because no intention was made about breaking any kind of copyright. We were just testing a software issue and ottdmk has been really careful about not publicly sharing that book.

In fact our conversation through Private Message was:

I'm just trying to figure out if I'm the only one seeing this. Kobo Utilities plugin says my database is fine...

Sure, use whatever method you want. Of course I will delete the book you give me.

Sorry about the delay in my replay. I'm not used to Private messages and I've just noticed it.
As everyone can see, in no way, nobody, never, has been trying to break any copyright. But we needed a conflictive book to test. I would like to have one free book to share, but I don't.

In fact I don't have the book anymore... (I've already deleted it).

I think we cannot be more transparent. Nevertheless I insist in apologies on my behalf.

I just tread PDF on eInk as though PDF didn't exist. Solves all kinds of problems.

I use my Aura HD as a companion to my Playbook at my gaming table. It works perfectly well for PDFs I don't have to jump around a lot in.

I'll eventually give koreader a try. Just not a high priority. Easier to stick with 3.2 for now.

The problem with 3.2 (IIRC) is that landscape navigation of pdfs is broken. It has just been recently fixed... So in certain files you could suffer an extra difficulty.

Exclamation A pdf which makes the device CRASH and reboot

Hey guys,

Here you have a pdf which doesn't go at a turtlish speed... It just doesn't go at all. Whenever I try to open it, my AuraHD just reboots.

Could you test please?

Canon EOS 7D Mark II AF Guide (6.6 Mb)

No copyrighted document, no DRM document, no nothing... A free available document so I suppose there won't be any Mobileread rules infraction...

Works fine on my AuraHD, in Koreader. Some of the text is real small, unless you turn reflow on, but then everything looks great.

Ken, do not get me wrong. No offence intended in this post. More over you, (and any other coder who hacks/extends/develops/enhances Kobo original software), completely deserve full recognition and praise because of your work...

But it doesn't matter if Koreader either works or not... (or if my Adobe Acrobat, or my Foxit reader, also work). We are speaking about Kobo built-in pdf reader... Your no-bug situation does not change the buggy Kobo one... don't you think?

More over, take in mind that your software (and others) are not the solution for "casual" users. They are always somehow hackish, somehow tricky to install and launch (as a mere example: I have to launch Koreader and then open a pdf, I cannot go to the library and directly open a pdf in Koreader...). So, yes, your software is great..., but it's not for everybody..., no matter how good you make it.

IMO, if you want Koreader to be a completely replacement of Kobo Nickel software (or whichever name it has) you have to do something like PRS+ for old Sony eReaders, which absolutely and transparently blends into the device original software and enhances/replaces parts of it.

First, The KOreader Project is NOT something that I created. It is a project that includes contributions of a number of posters here at MR (but not me) that include some who were the original authors of the project at GitHub.
I did post and try to maintain an install guide that, I hope, makes it easier to add KOreader (and some other programs) to The Kobo E-readers. The installation process has evolved in a number of ways, but I try to keep the guide reflecting ways to have the programs working as the user might wish.

There are several ways to "Launch" Koreader now, with The Kobo Start Menu and Advboot as well as the older "fmon" method that starts in the Nickel UI.
With the Start Menu or Advboot, you select to start Nickel OR KOreader, so the Nickel UI need not be started to use KOreader. (This also prevents a number of background processing routines that Nickel keeps running, from using resources while Koreader is running.)

When KOreader starts it is in its File Manager where you can indeed find and select a PDF that will open the PDF in the Reader. You can also have KOreader "Start with last opened file." If you use calibre to add your ebooks to your device, you can do a search on the metadata and have a listing of ebooks that have metadata that match the search terms. You can also "Browse Series" or "Browse Tags". With KOreader's OPDS support and a wireless connection, you can also browse the online catalogs, such as at "Project Gutenberg", "Feedbooks", "ManyBooks", the Internet Archive, or a Local calibre catalog. You can also add others like the Bean Freecatalog.
So, there are a number of ways to select books to read, with KOreader.

I am always suspect when terms that suggest that anything is "Always" something, or "never" something, are used. One of the great benefits of this sort of software development is that it "evolves", with improvements being made over time. But while there are some of us who may fiddle with one aspect or another, the basic functionality of the program is such that Plenty of "Casual Users" use it all the time.

Luck;
Ken

Ken, what you're saying is fine, but it doesn't change the fact that the OP is trying to see if the attached PDF causes the same behavior in the STOCK reader. For me, if a device doesn't do what I need it to do without hacking it, then I won't use the device. I spend too much time in my job tweaking and adjusting and "hacking" software packages to make them work in a client's environment. I do NOT want to do it for my entertainment.

I understand that you (and others) enjoy modifying your readers. Please respect those of us who don't, and stop trying to push the mods on us after we say we're not interested. It gets really annoying.

Full on the spot, Shari. I thought about a reply like yours but I didn't post it because I didn't want to add more stress on this OFFTOPIC comment.

But in defense of Ken I must say that I don't actually think that his intention was "trolling" in any way. It was just unfortunate, period. I'm sure he just wanted to help and he offered an alternate solution just in case some people didn't know about it. His mistake was INSISTING on that alternative...

I mean if this thread had been a Koreader pdf performance one, nobody would have thought about posting "why don't you use the Default renderer?", don't you think? That was the trouble. If Windows is buggy, saying Linux isn't once is fine as a hint of a possible workaround, but insisting on it is just pointless. What I want is Windows fixed, not changing to Linux.

Now let's return to the topic. I really wish that Kobo developers read this thread and FIX the issue (or issues) about pdfs.
  • Has anyone confirmed the reboot my posted pdf causes in my AuraHD?
  • Has anyone found a FREE sluggish pdf which could be easily test by every people?

The install process used is the same process as the process to update the Kobo FW, using a file. No Hacking or moding skills are required.

I am not pushing "mods" on anyone. Certainly not in this thread. I am just pointing out how a Kobo Device, including my AuraHD can do what his AuraHD is currently not doing. In other words a solution to the OP's issue.

Are you equally offended when the true "Hacks"/Mods to the original software,
are discussed? Nightmode? Two Finger Light control?
