I'm in the Sechelt library, which doesn't have any additional sources that I know of. Sigh. Looks like I'll just need to bite the bullet. At least this month the Baen Bundle is spectacularly unappealing.

I'm planning on getting 1636: The Viennese Waltz from the November bundle that comes out next week. It's the December bundle that doesn't have anything that I want to buy NOW. The Ryk Spoor I might eventually get, once I've read the first ones in that series. Ditto for book four of The Secret World Chronicles, and Catherine Asaro's Undercity looks interesting, but not interesting enough to get while I have 777 ebooks just waiting to be read!

I'm still several books behind in the 1632 series. Just ran out of steam after one too many by a certain author. So I'll wait on that one. And it's true, there are no must haves in the December bundle, but at least a couple that are interesting. The Asaro, and the Ryk Spoor, at least.

I've almost finished reading The Undead Pool. It's definitely one of the better books in the series and I'm already mourning that it will be ending after the next book. I'll have to get on the reserve list for the hardback book from my library -- so far they don't list an electronic copy in their Overdrive catalog.

I'm also listening to a fascinating past-lives story by Ann Brashares -- My Name is Memory. I just inserted the 6th CD (of 9) into the player in the car and expect to complete at least this disk and one more before I return the rental car on Friday morning.

I've always thought of Tommy and Tuppence as being among the "B" list of Christie's sleuths. Enjoyable but a bit bland.

Thrillers never were Christie's strong point: she should have stuck to detective stories. Her thrillers always have wildly improbably plots, with a resolution that arises as the result of some fantastic coincidence. I agree with you entirely about the "Tommy and Tuppence" books.

If you haven't read the other Christie book I mentioned, "Endless Night", I strongly urge you to do so. It's one of the very best of her books, to my mind, with a real "sting in the tail" ending.

Oh, I love that series. FYI, the three tie-in novellas have been collected into one ebook.

"The Independent Command" by James Doohan and S.M. Stirling. Bought from Baen around November 2000.

Baen description:

Quote:
Everybody knows how despicable the alien Fibians are. Allies of the fanatic Mollie rebels against the human Commonwealth, they show no mercy, they have no remorse, and they find human flesh delectable—at least when served live. Fielding a gigantic starfleet against Earth and its colonies, they march like the giant spiders they resemble through humanity's nightmares, and soon they will march across its devastated worlds.

When the captain of the starship Invincible is incapacitated after a Fibian attack, only Peter Raeder—former fighter pilot, starship flight engineer, and unorthodox hero of the war against the Mollies—can be entrusted with command of the ship. His mission: to track down the alien raiders who took out his captain, and then to start hitting the enemy behind the lines.

It's a suicide mission, and Raeder knows it . . . until the fortunes of battle drive him deeper into alien space than he'd ever intended to go, the Invincible too damaged ever to return home. There he discovers that the monstrous Fibians may not be monsters after all . . .
A strong end to an excellent trilogy. Very highly recommended.

I enjoyed The Rithmatist as well. And there is a sequel in the works, probably out sometime in 2015.

As mentioned in the book description these were originally online at Tor. What they don't mention is that they are still available there:
Down on the Farm
Overtime
Equoid

I saved the webpages as .txt files, cleaned them up a little and read them on my Kindle.

For that matter, two of them are in Tor's massive "Five Years" anthology and the third is in their "Some of the Best, 2013" collection - both of which have been available for free. Some people just like the convenience of having them in one volume.

Of course; I was just a little bothered by the phrasing on the ebook description that made it sound to me like the stories were at one point but no longer are available on the website. Not trying to criticize the ebook itself; choices are a good thing!

Just finished Hilary Mantel's new book, The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher. An interesting collection of short stories, all of which have been previously published except for the title story. There are autobiographical elements in some details, but I don't know how deep that goes. The stories are rather dark, and there are a few very disturbing ones.

Re the title story, she has publicly expressed her visceral dislike of Margaret Thatcher.
("Hilary Mantel reveals she fantasised about killing Margaret Thatcher", The Guardian, Sept 19, 2014,
"Hilary Mantel on Margaret Thatcher: 'I can still feel that boiling detestation'" The Guardian, Sept 19, 2014)
Oddly enough, that is the most upbeat story in the book.
