Anne Brotherton is sick and tired of being an heiress. She cannot bring herself to marry a fortune hunter. Why can't men like her for her sharp mind and kind heart rather than her impressive dowry? Just when she is about to bow to her fate as a confirmed spinster, she meets the handsome and charming Marcus Lithgow.

It's been years since Marcus set foot in England—why toy with the ton when he can fleece wealthy fools in Paris and Rome? Yet everything changes when he inherits a ramshackle estate. Marcus's first and only chance at a respectable life needs funding . . . the kind Anne Brotherton can provide. Such a wallflower should be ripe for the picking. So why does Marcus feel like he's the one hanging by a thread?

She nearly falls for Marcus's smooth seduction. But when Anne realizes she's being strung along, a lust for payback empowers her like never before. Two can play the game of deception. The game of love, however, has its own rules . . .

Don't worry, not spoiled at all. The warning is at the beginning so I didn't continue reading (though I was sorely tempted). I'm just a little miffed that my curiosity was not so easily satisfied

They've fixed it so this weeks releases are now discounted, but no pre-order discount. Maybe that's intentional although I can see no reason to pre-order then.

BTW: If any MN (Twin Cities area) folks out there know of anyone looking for a good designer (mainly print, but other things too) with 20+ years experience (or related fields, wouldn't mind some change) let me know. Remember how I was layed off earlier? Well I have been working there part time and getting partial unemployment and they were telling me they were close to being able to bring me back full-time. Had a meeting today since I found out I've only got two weeks on unemployment left. Turns out they've screwed me and have no intention of my position going back to full time until at least the first of the year. It's partly my fault I know, but having been there for 20 years and having a loyalty to the owner made me trust them (thought they had loyalty to me too) more than I should have. I've been looking all this time, but not as hard as I could have and there just aren't many design jobs here that fit. I'm hoping to hear back from one company, but who knows. Sorry to share the misery, just needed to vent a bit. Sorry for the way OT.

I work here and I don't see any design positions open at the moment. But if you see anything that's relevant to you please let me know and I can forward your resume to the HR director.

The Shadow Princess by Mary Hart Perry (Diversion books; the author has published at least one other book with William Morrow). Okay, this looks rather like a historical mystery, but I'm posting it anyway.

Quote:
To catch one of history’s most notorious killers, a princess risks losing her family, her life—and her heart…

London, 1888: A year after Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee terror mounts in the city's slums. A killer has butchered two prostitutes, the crimes brutal even by London’s hardened standards. Rumors of the murders reach Princess Vicky, daughter of Queen Victoria and grieving widow of the German Emperor Frederick III. When her niece Princess Maud visits, she brings with her even worse news—the Metropolitan Police have a suspect. It’s Vicky’s nephew, Crown Prince Eddy. Desperate to clear her family's name, Vicky rushes back to England.
Detective Inspector Thomas Edmondson believes there is a royal cover-up behind the killings. He will stop at nothing to expose the truth and bring a murderer to justice before he can kill again. But when Vicky joins him in searching for the man who will become known as Jack the Ripper, neither of them foresee the overpowering attraction that will draw together the royal and the commoner—or the danger their love puts them in.

Lily Cigar by Tom Murphy (Diversion Books; orig. Signet, 1979).

Quote:
A woman for the ages. A saga for all time.

She was beautiful and innocent until she was led astray by the dark desires that rule men's hearts. You will never forget Lily—as a child watching her mother die in want...as an orphan struggling to protect her reckless brother...as a teenager discovering the power of desire...as a fear-filled young girl learning to sell her body in the most elegant brothel in the wickedest city on earth...as a captivating beauty whom men would pay any price to possess...as a mother desperately trying to keep the truth from her daughter...as a woman forced by love to return to the city of her shame and seek to conquer it..

And you will never forget Lily's story—as it moves from the Hell's Kitchen squalor and Fifth Avenue splendor of old New York to the rolling decks of a great clipper ship to the brawling streets and magnificent Nob Hill mansions of San Francisco, through storm and earthquake and fire in a breathless saga of love, intrigue and illicit passion.

Apache Magic by Janis Reams Hudson (Diversion Books; orig. Zebra 1991), first volume in the Apache-Colton Series.

Quote:
To the Apaches, Daniella Blackwood was an adopted daughter, respected and cherished. To their shaman, the bold white streak in her hair made her special and her visions in the flames make her a woman of magic. Yet no magic could protect Daniella from the passion that sears her senses when she first meets Travis Colton.

To Arizona rancher Travis Colton, the mysterious Daniella is his only chance at rescuing his son. Travis and his ten-year-old son were captured by a band of Cochise's warriors. Left for dead, Travis managed to make his way home, determined to do whatever it takes to get his son back.

Travis and Daniella's quest together will take more than magic; it will take a passion neither is ready to handle.

Whispered Heat by Anna Eberhardt (Diversion Books; orig. Bantam Fanfare, 1992).

Quote:
Slader Reems rides into town straddling a powerful motorcycle. The dark visor of his helmet hides a cold smile. After an enforced five year absence he is back to exact his revenge and to claim everything that was his rightful due.

Lissa Jamison knows she can't ever allow herself to surrender to Slader's touch and risk another betrayal. Their childhood friendship had flamed into a passionate desire. Wary and wanting, she must now protect her heart.

Hidden agendas and illicit longings are just beneath the deceptively calm surface of their small town. Revenge, passion, and secrets simmer and build to a climax in the summer of WHISPERED HEAT.

Well that just totally sucks! Hubby said he knows how you feel. He was with the factory for 5 years and they just let him go after he couldn't work because a severe case of food poisoning.
