Well, I was doing good for awhile, but have recently gone on an ebook buying binge. I bought some Baen bundles/singles and a few others. WOW I have a ridiculous amount of books now. You'd think that would get me to stop. Well, at least I have enough books for the winter, or several winters. Anyways, I am doing my best to read the Baen books. I'm having a Baen month this month. Should be fun. LOL

Spent over $60 again this month for "only" 23 books.
However, the vast majority of these books were on my wishlist. Only 5 weren't, but 3 of those were highly recommended.

I was lucky and managed to snag a few good coupon codes (55 and 65) -the majority of those purchases definitely contributed to to the higher purchases.
Over all I'm pretty happy with what I've purchased this month.

I also switched to cataloging my purchases by hand, which is tedious, but it's made me vastly more aware of what I'm purchasing/purchased. O_O Although now I have to transfer it all onto the computer.

I think September was the first month this year that I read more books than I acquired. Possibly the first month since records began. (Last year.)

Same here, pretty much: I managed to end September with only three ebooks bought (+ a handful of free books, but not going overboard with those either). I also didn't read as much as I usually do, but I did manage to read seven.

October will be a little worse, since I have four pre-orders and I think another book (final volume of a series I've enjoyed a great deal) is also out in October, so we'll see. I should still be able to keep it under ten books.

September: Bought 24 (for $39.95), read 16

It looks bad, but 20 of those 24 were the Cadfael novels, which I'll be (re-)reading over the next few years - a good buy at just $1.49 each.

For October I currently plan on buying only 6 books, and five of those are from subscriptions.

I bought 10-15 ebooks through the whole summer, and somehow I felt bad. After reading this thread, I realize what an amateur "hoarder" I am. Still, it's a lot for me as I always try to live as minimalist as possible (and yes, this is also true for virtual files).

Welcome to the thread, HYPE.

I think that for all of us the problem isn't the absolute number of books we buy, but the diffeence between the number we buy and the number we read.

Indeed, though I've been rather good this summer about buying new books, it hasn't done much to reduce my TBR. Part of the problem is that I've gotten into two separate re-read cycles, which make for good reading, but not for reducing the TBR.

I've got 5.3 years worth of TBR books, and I keep buying more. I've tried the wish-list trick, and it hasn't helped. I need help!!

I get daily emails from BookBub and currently have 17 books downloaded on the Kindle app that were mostly free and none more than $.99. Some on the Kobo app too.

I actually unsubscribed from bookbub. I know they're mostly free, but bookbub are just enablers and the ebooks pile up. I hardly ever read the freebies anyways. After my little buying binge I have sworn off acquiring too many ebooks. We'll see how long that lasts.

I added it all up and subtracted and I'm sad to say that even if I buy NO MORE eBOOKS or audiobooks for the rest of the year, I will still be overbudget for the year. So, the best I can do from here on out is to try to stick to my goals of wishlists. However, that's hard because Amazon has a bunch of Westerns that I don't have for $1.99 until the 24th. So unfair. I did start a Calibre library of books purchased but unread and that will help me resist. There's a lot of them.

Hi Waylander and Tarana!

I think that perhaps the only thing you can try now is going cold turkey. Break the habit for a bit, and you might be able to control your buying better in 2015.

How about starting with a week of not buying any ebooks? Let's make it easier - just for this this working week. So no purchases AT ALL today, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

I'm sure you can do it.

And if you feel tempted, post here about the book you're considering buying and wait AT LEAST two hours after posting. The delay should help you regain control and reconsider the purchase before you make it.

One way to think about it: Do you want to read this new book more than 99%* of the books in your TBR pile?

* I used to say half or three-quarters, but for people with large TBR piles, I think 99% is more useful. For me that would mean (roughly) in my top 5 books.

Thankyou for being so understanding Pdurrant. I'll aim for the end of the week as you suggested. I really need to go cold turkey before I'm snowed under!

Good luck! I'm sure you can do it. And the time you would have spent buying books you can spend reading! A win-win situation!
