That's bad news - VS2008 won't even install on my Windows 7 64-bit. If you (or anyone else) could build a newer version, I'd love to test it here.

Thankfully, it looks like Philantrop & kovidgoyal are on the way to a solution within the iOS reader application plugin.

Time for another Calibre donation.

@Philantrop - VS2008 installed and running on my Win7 64bit system, see attached image. I recently installed a fresh Windows and a fresh everything else onto a new SSD drive.

When it comes to installing, VS isn't the fastest kid on the block, particularly on a spinning hard drive. IIRC took around 20-30 minutes, around 10 on an SSD.

Also attaching the VS2008 Readme.htm

Can't help you out with a rebuild, as I have no Apple devices.

Great, but it fails here at the prerequisites already.

To just build the libraries as described in https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibr...vice_notes.rst you don't need any Apple device. :-)

I would need a fruit machine to test it; old habits die hard, no code leaves my place without testing - period.

I'm currently offshore, I won't take on building it remotely. Also I have assiduously, knowingly and deliberately avoided installing a calibre development environment

It would be better if you resolved pre-req's issue. VS2008 will run on XP, there's nothing special I can think of. IIRC it requires .NET3.51 but if you don't already have it, then the install will get it from the install media.

What sort of install did you do? I always do a Custom, but IIRC the only thing that's changeable for VS2008 is the install location and what doco gets installed

So what message do you get ?

The only message I'm getting is "setup.exe has stopped working". Anyway, I won't go into debugging the installation of an IDE I don't use on an OS I don't use. Thanks anyway.

I still hope some kind soul will do the build or I'll simply have to drop Windows from the supported OS' and be done with it.

My advice was meant to help the single person whose post I quoted, and it did, indeed, help them. I wasn't trying to give blanket advice to everyone.

That would be a great shame (obviously) as Calibre / Marvin is far superior to any other e-reader I've used.

I want to update my library with five books that are in my calibre library.
That screen is all you'll see on your device. Everything else has to be done from the Calibre end of things. Once you have the connector showing ready on your device, do you have the MarvinXD button on your menu bar in Calibre?

(I recommend also using the Reading List plugin, which allows you to queue items to be sync'd to your device later.)

That's not a pre-req message, its some sort of lockup, probably caused by locked files or registry values.

You have to run setup.exe, not vs-setup.msi. Did it get as far as asking for the license key.

Also what's the provenance of your Windows install and the VS2008 media. If they ain't kosher or Windows hasn't been validated then that could be the problem.

I recall I had something like that happen to me when I installed Expression Studio. It was on an unactivated Windows 7 behind an air firewall, I had to validate over the phone

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm having these problems on a Mac running OS X 10.9.5. It was working fine before the last plugin update. Thursday night, everything was working fine. Saturday, no go. I'm currently running ios Reader 1.4.4 and Maravin XD 1.2.4

Scratch that all. I've figured that part out. Stay tuned. And Philantrop, if I get this successfully compiled, how do you want me to get it to you?

Okay, I give up. I can get libcnary to compile fine, but libplist throws fatal errors that I haven't been able to debug.

I've got a full course load at the moment, so I don't have time to puzzle through this, but I hope someone else has the time and inclination, because it would be really disappointing to lose Windows support for iOSR and MarvinXD.

@Philantrop: I'll be happy to build it with VS 2008 for you. I would have to do that anyway, since I insist on compiling all the components of calibre I distribute from source myself. I suggest you build it with whatever version of VS you have and see if it works first. If it does, then I will update the version bundled with calibre. Send me any updated instructions for building (if needed).

IOS Reader Apps Working and Not....

I saw that the IOS Reader Apps plugin had been updated to 1.4.4 and installed it in Cali!bre. I then tried Marvin on my iPhone 6 and to my happy surprise it worked. There was no malformed database error, no problem in Calibre communicating to Marvin. I transferred a test book to Marvin from Calibre without a problem. So I happily picked up my iPad Air to send some books to it. But, horrors, on the iPad Air I still received the same Communications problem dialog box with the malformed database error extended dialog! First I thought it might have something to do with having had to restore my iPhone 6 this morning (for an entirely different cause). I decided to restore my iPad as well and just lose the one or two day of text messages but that idea failed. After the restore my iPad Air still could not communicate with Marvin. So to capsulize: Both my iPhone 6 and my iPad Air are running IOS 8.0.2. Both iDevices are running the latest Marvin. My Calibre (latest) is running the new 1.4.4. IOS Reader Apps plugin. The iPad Air still fails to connect to Calibre with the Communications Error dialog and the malformed datase extended dialog. However, my iPhone 6 connects and works normally. My glass is half-full but, unfortunately, it's the half I really want which is empty. Any ideas?
