I know. You can only imagine my eagerness to face that meal. According to her reckoning we should all have the equivalent of a quarter of a cabbage. We finally worked out something of a truce, I'd get my quarter raw. That's actually a fairly significant amount of food eaten that way, but I was given no quarter in that struggle (Bwahahaha!)

I was thinking about meals like that the other day, I really don't recall foods that my kids didn't like and I was never of the school of "eat it or go hungry". I like food too much to do that to anyone. Looking back I'd say 4 out of 7 of my mother's dinners were altogether inedible

Consider yourself lucky... The there were two redeeming features of my mother's meals. One was that my grandfather (her father) was a butcher, and the other was that she was an incredibly lazy cook. Combined, this meant we ate steaks, chops or roasts every night, broiled or roasted. She didn't 'do' anything to the meat so that never tasted bad. We just had to salt, pepper, and garlic it ourselves. She just put it into the broiler or oven. No problems there, although sometimes she felt creative and dumped a can of soup over the meat before cooking. Horrible thing to do to a steak... But ALL veggies had to come from cans. ALL of them, every meal. It's amazing we didn't die from lack of vitamins and minerals. There is NOTHING worse than canned peas and carrots, unless it's canned okra... White bread on the table every meal. Sometimes she remembered the butter. But not often.

Wish I could say the same. My 3 all tend to like different things, and the middle one is particularly difficult. I'll sometimes end up cooking 3 different meals at dinner time, as I'm also not of the "eat it or go hungry" school . But I do sometimes make them cook their own dinner if they don't want the main attraction (like tonight) .

As a pre-teen, I was perhaps the pickiest eater on the planet. If it wasn't recognizable meat (with absolutely NO gravy to hide what might be lurking under it,) I wouldn't eat it. Forget veggies entirely unless it was corn or french fries. In a Chinese restaurant, I even refused to eat the contents of egg rolls. I'd only eat the wrappers, spare ribs, roast pork, and white rice. I've come a Loooong way, baby!

Part of the issue may have been that their palates were developed while living in Germany. The other side of that was explaining; no sweetheart, they don't have frogs legs or escargot at McDonalds. (Well not really, we never went to McDonald's, but the local gasthof in our village of about 1500 souls had them, and that was our fast food for years

Well, I had a frozen lemonade from the campus Starbucks for my last non-water drink. The last food I ate was a very filling tofu, eggplant, and noodle bowl with mini-spring-roll from the Vietnamese fusion place across the street. It kept me for a long time but that was lunch and I'm getting hungry but I don't get off until 9 (open late for midterms).

Stitch! You're in Thailand and I'm in New Orleans and I'm the one who ate Asian fusion (albeit Vietnamese) and you ate Cajun (Cajun isn't New Orleans food. That would be Creole. However, it is Louisiana food. Big differences in cuisine and culture). Anyway, I find that amusing.

Re the post about childhood picky eating, I was not a picky eater at all. It did take me awhile to eat tomatoes and, weirdly, I would eat fried oysters but not hamburger. The look of ground meat freaked me out, yet I had no problem with hot dogs.
