Yep. I think that's where they'll fall down. Windows is just "heavier" than ChromeOS.

But it will run programs that Chrome is incapable of running.

I mentioned over in the Chromebook thread that there was going to be a Windows Tablet for $120. This will be with the OS and Bing. I don't know about the Office software.

Microsoft is trying to head off Chromebook at the pass like they did the Netbook. They sold the Home XP license to the Netbook people for $5 to $10 so they wouldn't just only provide Linux (alone.)

Like was mentioned above the Chrome OS has some advantages over Windows, as well as disadvantages which Google is working on.

My pet peeve is you can't print directly to a legacy printer from Chromebook. The computer I am on right now is 15 years old, running XP but most importantly it is the house print server whether from a Chromebook or a Windows machine all on Wi-Fi.

The other day, my wife calls and says the printer isn't working though Wi-Fi was on. I told her to check "that old computer" and sure enough after one of those Wiondows updates it had shut down.

The next printer I get will be a Wi-Fi machine.

Yeah, but how well will they run them? There's already Windows laptops in the $250 range and it's not like they've killed ChromeBooks. I can't really see much use in a 32GB Windows computer. Nearly half of that space would be used up by the OS.

Yep, that's what they're trying. But there are big differences this time -- the biggest being that Google is a huge corporation with a lot of momentum, and not several laptop vendors who, in addition to marketing Linux netbooks, also had to keep Microsoft happy so they could continue getting favorable licensing terms for the Windows OS. And M$ charged these vendors a Windows license fee for every Linux netbook because (they said) Windows would be loaded on to them.

And there's also the fact that Microsoft's netbook killers ran Windows XP, a popular OS. The modern ChromeBook "killers" are running Windows 8.1, an unpopular OS.

You don't need much to run OverDrive, Audible, and Calibre.

MS is now admitting it lost its direction with W8. It is even skipping W9 and going straight to W10 to further distance itself from that debacle.

Good question. I've got a Lenovo Yoga 2 11 with much better specs (Pentium, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, etc.) and it barely puts along on Windows 8.1. And every week or so you turn it on to see the dreaded, "You've got 9,347,824 updates ready to install. Would you like to install now and hopefully live long enough for Windows to finish?" I'm thinking those Streams will be slow-motion machines!

The trick, as it has always been, is to get rid of (or not install) anything that you don't really need. My tablet runs 8,.1 on an Atom processor with 2 GB of RAM, and is more responsive than my desktop at home with 64 bit Win7, 16 GB and a quad core processor, because I am very picky about what I install on it.

(And it's not Microsoft's fault. It's the vendor you bought it from, who get paid to pre-install loads of crap, nearly all of which a) runs all the time, and b) spies on you for the software company.)

Yeah, Windows updates is a little slow, but that's true on all versions, not just 8.1.

I already uninstalled a lot of the BS software. But it is also Microsoft's fault for building a bunch of crap into Win 8.1 that we don't need or want. The touch interface is not very good, and no doubt it eats up a lot of processing power too. And it is certainly Microsoft's fault that we have so many updates, many of which trash working drivers. This is Vista all over again. Win 95 was okay, ME sucked, XP was good, Vista sucked, Win 7 was good, Win 8 sucks. Every other upgrade is a stinker, and Win 8 is the stinker. Even just browsing the internet in Firefox can be slow.

To run it, yes.

What about storing things in it?

If you are using an external hard drive, then it is disingenuous to also say "You don't need much to run OverDrive, Audible, and Calibre."

An external HDD hanging off of it would be a pain. A USB stick, not so much.
