Free Today Amazon UK (Endeavour press) - Death Speaks Softly (A DCI Webb Mystery) By Anthea Fraser

'There were plenty of men, both tutors and post-graduates, who'd been attracted to Arlette Picard.
But when the young French girl disappears from Broadshire University, it sparks one of Chief Inspector Webb's most complex investigations.
She was a vivacious young woman, carefree and loved by many — or was she?
Was her disappearance been caused by jealousy?
It is not just her disappearance that makes Webb uneasy. .
On the fringe of his enquires is Professor Warwick, a man whose brilliance teetered on the brink of madness.
And the arrival of the girl's parents from France soon leads to a further tragedy, which Webb is helpless to prevent... '

There are a bunch of good (IMO) mysteries on sale at Amazon US as part of the US Kindle Big Deal, good from Sept 19 to Oct 5. I don't usually like to post Kindle's big sales, leaving that to others in other threads, but this one had enough good books in it that I felt it was worth it to tell folks in the mystery thread to go take a look if they haven't already.

I'm a big historical mystery fan, so I was happy to find of bunch of books by Bernard Knight, Michael Jecks, and Fiona Buckley. Buckley's Ursula Blanchard series, set in Elizabeth I's time, is one of my favorite historical mystery series. Several early ones in that series are part of this sale. AT Drake had mentioned the Jecks books in the Kobo thread a couple of days ago (link) as on sale at Kobo, and they still are, although not couponable.

Just in a quick look through the rest, I spotted one or more books by G M Malliet, Lee Hollis, Tasha Alexander, Leena Lehtolainen, Molly Cox Bryan, Lynda La Plante, Jan Burke, Josephine Tey, Jess Lourey, Waverly Curtis, Edna Buchanan, Gladys Mitchell, Suzann Ledbetter, Camille Minichino, and Ed Gorman. Many of these I've read and enjoyed - if not the specific book, at least other books by the author. And I'm sure there are a bunch more good books that I just didn't spot or didn't recognize the authors off the top of my head.

Many have been on sale before, but some seemed new to me...

Most seem to be $1.99.

I'm in a bit of crunch with a deadline at work tomorrow, so haven't had a chance to check out other sites for price-matching, but I'll definitely be looking tomorrow after my deadline is over

The link to the sale page is here: http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=6180870011

You can then just click on the Mystery & Thrillers link - or, of course, any of the categories that suit your fancy.

Here's an easy link to all the Simon & Schuster UK-published books which are price-matched in the Amazon sale, available @ Kobo for $1.99 each in Canada and presumably also the US.

(ETA: and Scribner for Ursula Blanchard and others @ Kobo; you'll have to scroll past a bunch of 99 cent essay shorts, but once you hit the $1.99 range, there's about a dozen sale titles across multiple genres)

In addition to sale titles by Michael Jecks & Bernard Knight, if you like those two authors you should also pick up their two "The Medieval Murderers" collaborative novels listed which feature them and a bunch of other medieval mystery-writing authors making a shared story involving their particular sleuths sequentially investigating mysteries centred around murder-attracting objects which get passed around down the ages.

They've also got some promising-looking non-fiction from Catharine Arnold on crime and death in London, which mystery readers may also may be interested in.

(ETA 2: I broke down and bought both of Arnold's books from Kobo. She's an academic and the samples showed pictures and footnotes, so I couldn't resist. Also, the other available book in her series of London history is regularly priced at $19.99, so they were probably close to literally 90% off.)

As for Amazon, I've personally read and enjoyed all three (thus far) of Leena Lehtolainen's Finnish-translated Maria Kallio mystery series which are exclusively available from the AmazonCrossing imprint, so I second the recommendation for them if you want to try a low-key Nordic police procedural (they're a bit retro since the original publication was in the early 90s, and very realism-oriented, so YMMV and here's what I thought of the 1st in the Reading Recs forum if you want more details on that).

Today's Open Road Media freebie:

The Fire Within
by Patricia Wentworth

Currently:

Quote:
Overview:

A romantic treasure from the beloved author of the Miss Silver Mystery series

A grande dame of British crime, Patricia Wentworth is best known as the creator of Miss Maud Silver, the Tennyson-quoting schoolteacher whose second career as a private detective is just as unlikely as it is thrilling. With a prim, unassuming demeanor that belies her fierce intelligence, Miss Silver is never more formidable than when she’s rescuing true love from wanton villainy.

Love is an essential ingredient in the Miss Silver Mysteries, and the thread that connects Wentworth’s early romances to her world-famous crime series. In this tale of the heart, a passionate young woman and her married sister compete for the affections of a handsome doctor. With a dash of mysticism and a hint of murder, The Fire Within is a compelling love story in its own right and a revealing glimpse into the genesis of the indomitable Miss Silver.

Open Road Media has updated their selection of $1.99 sale titles for (presumably) the month.

Here's some easy Kobo linkage (since ORM titles are couponable and maybe you'd like to use up any low-value contest codes you might have gotten if you're in the appropriate regions) to sort by price (once you scroll past their public-domain reprints) for their dedicated Mystery/Thriller sub-imprints:
  • Open Road Media Mystery & Thriller
  • MysteriousPress.com (a lot of these are short stories, so check the length at some place which lists page numbers or filesize (everything labelled Bibliomysteries or Black Mask is a short), but there are full-length novels by Ed Gorman, Donald E. Westlake, and others)
  • the main Open Road imprint search, if you want to see everything they've discounted (quite a lot of history and horror and litfic, if you're also interested in such)

Hey Mort thanks for this idea!!

Here's the Amazon Aus link: http://www.amazon.com.au/s/ref=lp_24...price-asc-rank

Edit
Good grief!!!

I'm 14 pages in and still looking through all the freebies! A lot of stuff that doesn't interest in me in the slightest, but I've picked up 14 so far.

Open Road is having a "Cold War Mysteries and Thrillers from Russian Spies to the Cuban Missile Crisis" sale. It just popped up in my Inbox this morning, and doesn't say how long the sale is on.

I tried looking for these using AT Drake's search from a few posts ago, and many (probably all) are there, but mixed in with a lot of other books. So if you want to look just at these Cold War-ish books, here's the list and the link.

Dinallo: Rockets' Red Glare
Bergman: Hollywood and Levine
Davis: Pale Betrayer
Block: The Triumph of Evil
Marlowe: Trouble is My Name
Gorman: Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?
Land: The Alpha Deception
Berger: The Kennedy Imperative
Freemantle: The Kremlin Conspiracy
Coonts: The Minotaur
Grady: Six Days of Condor
Gardner: The Garden of Weapons

link: http://www.openroadmedia.com/coldwarmysteries?

As always, to buy directly from this Open Road link, you have to click on the book cover, then in the pop-up, click the "Buy the ebook" button, and then choose the retailer from the drop down list. Or just go to your favorite retailer and search for the book you want...probably easier.

Gatekeeper is the 14th in the Joe Gunther series, and it is a US Kindle Countdown deal - at $0.99 for all of four more hours (8 am US Pacific time on Oct 3 right now), then going to $1.99 (which is still 1/2 off the price of most of the Joe Gunther backlist) for an unknown amount of time.

He doesn't seem to be going in order anymore with the discounting, or else I missed all of the ones between #5 and #14

link: http://www.amazon.com/Gatekeeper-Joe.../dp/B00C3ESMVK

Spoiler:
Quote:
Vermont detective Joe Gunther vows to stop the flow of drugs into his beloved state when in the course of a week a young heroin addict is gunned down while trying to rob a convenience store, a narcotics dealer is found hanging from a bridge, and the granddaughter of political bigwigs dies of an overdose.

Oh yeah, and Open Season, the first is the series, is also a repeat US Kindle Countdown deal - also at $0.99 for about 1 day and 7 hours more, then going to $1.99, for an unknown amount of time.

link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C3LKYZ0/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Lt. Joe Gunther of the Brattleboro, Vermont police force has a serious problem: in a community where a decade could pass without a single murder, the body count is suddenly mounting. Innocent citizens are being killed—and others set-up—seemingly orchestrated by a mysterious ski-masked man. Signs suggest that a three year-old murder trial might lie at the heart of things, but it’s a case that many in the department would prefer remained closed. A man of quiet integrity, Lt. Gunther knows that he must pursue the case to its conclusion, wherever it leads.

Open Season is the first of Archer Mayor’s twenty-three Joe Gunther novels, a series of gripping police procedurals set in New England, where small-town charm, stoicism and civility sometimes conceal brutal truths.

It's available for $0.99 now, and for approximately two more days. It is currently 10 am on Sept 8, US Pacific time. The time clicker on the webpage says it's going up to $1.99 after that. Since most of Mayor's backlist titles are $3.99, there may be some additional countdown time at increasing prices, and then back up to $3.99 after that, but can't really tell.

Amazon's countdown deals are often self-pubbed, but this is a backlist title, originally published in DTB in the 90's.

Blurb is here:

The third and fourth books in this series have been US Kindle Countdown deals in the last couple of months, and there is a report that the first one, at least, was also free/reduced at one point as well - although quite a while ago. So it may be worth keeping an eye out - it appears that Archer Mayor may be working his way through these backlist titles, putting them on countdown one-by-one.

Another of Julie Smith's books is free again today, at least, at both Amazon US and Kobo US.

What nice is that this one, Death Turns a Trick, is the first in her Rebecca Schwartz series, so it gives folks who like to read in order a chance to try from the beginning. For any newcomers to MR, Smith's books are discounted/free on Amazon US fairly often - she plays around with the pricing a lot, so it's worth just keeping an eye out if you want to pick up the books in one or more of here series.

Amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/Death-Turns-Tr.../dp/B008S695AO

Kobo US: http://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/boo...Turns-A-Trick/

blurb:
Spoiler:
Quote:
The FIRST book in the Rebecca Schwartz mystery series by Edgar Award Winner Julie Smith.

“Funny and witty, with a clever, outspoken heroine.” -Library Journal

“Rebecca’s lively first-person narration brands her a new detective to watch.” -Wilson Library Bulletin

A ROLLICKING TALE OF MURDER, ROMANCE, AND A BORDELLO…

“A lively romp of a novel … Smith shows an Agatha Christie-like capacity for making much ado about clues, concocting straw hypotheses, and surprising us, in the end … Smith’s crisp storytelling … and her likable, unpredictable heroine will make readers look forward to more.” -San Francisco Chronicle

Rebecca Schwartz, nice Jewish lawyer with a few too many fantasies, is happily playing the piano in a whorehouse when she suddenly finds herself assigned to make sure a near-naked state senator escapes a police raid. That dirty job done, a lovely evening turns even more delightful when she’s picked up by the cops and spends the next two hours at the Hall of Justice. Could this day get any worse? Of Course! Guess who arrives home to find a dead hooker on her living room floor!

Handsome Parker Phillips, Rebecca’s new beau and the most attractive man she’s met in ages, is arrested for the murder. (Worse, she suspects he might actually have done it.)

On the plus side, another very attractive man is following the case--reporter Rob Burns of the San Francisco Chronicle, a possible ally. And there are other possibilities.

Fans of Janet Evanovich, Stephanie Bond, and Elizabeth Peters will get a kick out of this one.
