PDF... ??!!

WTF...
Sadly, there are millions of e-books in pdf and many people think that the best way to distribute a book is to print it to PDF formatted for A4 or Letter. Datasheets, journals, user manuals, textbooks ... those are all books, even when they are not meant to be read on an e-ink reader.

If you look at it that way, yes. They could be considered to be digital books, but IMHO, not ebooks; not in the way I think an ebook should be.

Therefore I don't consider a PDF manual for my audio receiver to be an ebook. It's just the digital version of a paper manual. I only consider files to be an ebook if they are specifically created to work well on an ebook reader, and a PDF-file is not it; thus I am of the opinion that PDF is not an ebook format, as it was not designed to be used on an ebook reader.

Maybe it's a bit narrow-minded, but if one would consider PDF to be an ebook, then a plain text file, or a website saved in MHT (one compressed file for all content) is also an ebook....

There is a perfectly good reason to rely on pdf for certain kind of books. It ensures that the layout does not get messed up depending on which pdf-reader you use. You can use the fanciest typesetting without having to rely on images.

For novels? Probably not the best format, but there is more than novels.

Yes. Limitation on plain text file or mht file is that there is no way to add DRM if necessary. Epup and Kindle ebooks are nothing but glorified html files and images (exactly like mht) with the addition of optional DRM.

I'm always amazed at how far off topic threads wander. (Not that I haven't been the cause of that myself.)

This thread being about the Voyage, there's probably plenty of mileage in it yet

I think it's a little pricy and the bands on the sides are little weird...

Well, I've gone for it. Regretted not getting 3G for the paperwhite (had I done so, I'd have stuck with that), but was going to buy a 3G come hell or high water and made more sense to go with the Voyage. But yes, a spot of beans on toast for a while.

It looks good in theory - fingers very much crossed it lives up to the publicity. I'm hoping for better contrast most of all. If it is all it is sold as being, I shall be very happy. Yaaay, no more traipsing around hotels in pyjamas trying to find a wifi signal Yes that was me you passed in the corridor, in flannelette and furry pink mules, cursing quietly to myself while waving around a paperwhite.

Pricey perhaps, little bands, I quite like them....

Yeah well, I'm not really that concerned about the bands and what-have-you. I think it looks ok, not that exciting but ok.

If you can afford it, I highly recommend refrying those beans in a bit of bacon grease! That's what I do!

Software improvements

For me the biggest improvement would be the ability to manage the device from my PC. Why do I have to scroll through screen after screen of book titles ticking those that I want to add to a collection? Why can't I just drag and drop from my PC. Doesn't feel like it would be a big deal to implement.

Amazon used to have it setup so Calibre could be used to sideload and manage your collections at the same time. Then Amazon decided it was too much freedom so Amazon took away the ability for Software to manage your Collections, Now you have to jailbreak your Kindle and pray it works in order to manage collection via your computer.
