Ian Hamilton's (SYKM) Ava Lee series starring a Chinese-Canadian Catholic lesbian (possibly bisexual, but so far I've only run into brief mentions of her having dated women in the past) forensic accountant who tracks down white-collar crime in Asia was an Arthur Ellis Award Winner for Best First Novel for the 1st in series, and books #1-4 are $4.99 each and couponable (down from around $12, I'm hoping that #5-6 will drop also, since #2-4 were still full-price when the sale started but have adjusted). I picked up the 1st+bonus prequel edition yesterday and I'm midway through it and enjoying it quite a lot and I'm going to buy the others later today. Gail Bowen's (SYKM, Wikipedia) Joanne Kilbourn series starring a political science professor in Saskatchewan has a 3-book introductory omnibus for $4.99 (McClelland & Stewart, a Canadian publisher acquired by Random House and not couponable), and several books in this series have been Winner or Finalist for the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Novel (this is our major national mystery/crime prize, akin to the Edgar Awards). Scott Young's (SYKM) Inspector Mateesie series starring an Inuit RCMP officer in the Arctic is another Arthur Ellis Best First Novel finalist, and the 2-book bundle from HarperCollins Canada is also $4.99 (not couponable). I haven't read either Bowen or Young before, but at these prices and with the prospect of Supporting Canadian Culture, I'm going to give it a try. UK author Michael Jecks (SYKM, Wikipedia)'s long-running Knights Templar mystery series starring a retired Crusader returned to medieval England has books #7-13 and #32 (actually a #0 prequel filling in Sir Baldwin's backstory during the Crusades, which is an action adventure with no murder mystery in it, according to the author foreword) is on sale for $1.99 each from Simon & Schuster UK (not couponable). I bought #32 and #7 earlier this week and I've started on the latter and am enjoying it so far (the author includes nice historical notes in the introduction), enough to go back and scoop the rest. There's also two Terry Pratchett books in the sale at $4.99 each (up from $4.39 on Thursday when I should have picked them up straightaway, aarghdammit!), Dodger (couponable), and something he co-wrote with Stephen Baxter. Michael Jecks historical notes are my favorite part of his books (usually a long intro or notes in the back). Very detailed and he gives some fascinating insight into how he came across the info.

I also did not buy a single book with the contest codes. The highest I received was 45% and I gave all 3 of those away as the books on my wishlist are all quite expensive and I'd need higher than that to buy them.
I have bought twice from the Japanese store using the 1stkobo code, which meant one book cost me 83c and the other book was free. I would love to be privvy to Kobo's sales figures, especially to see what effect the contest has had. Those of us that post on this forum represent only a small portion of Kobo's customer base, the vast majority of their customers probably dont even know about the contest or dont play it. We here have had the mixed blessing of higher coupon codes and have come to expect them, but the general public are probably very happy to have 25% off. |

C'est à dire? ça marche à la fnac?
The code on the first page. In France, we can get kobo by a french web seller (fnac), I want to know if someone try it... Otherwise, I'll try and I'll tell you if it works or not. Quote:

I bought one Baen book this time around thanks to a coupon fairy gifting me a 75% code. I'm sure Kobo doesn't care too much that I didn't buy a bunch as they can't be making anything (and wouldn't even be breaking even) on the high discount purchases.

My ebooks go through a certain cycle. I buy and download them into Limbo, where they sit until I have a chance to process them. That's where I fix any bad metadata, standardize some of the CSS (usually font sizes and text indents), add any autograph pages I've collected that apply, and otherwise prep the book. Once that's done, it goes into my library and, if it's a book I haven't read or one I have read but always want to have available, onto the Glo. As I read, I watch for typos and formatting flaws, using the annotation feature to document them. Then, when I finish reading the book, I go back into the library and fix those, removing the annotations as I go. Once that's done, I update the library copy and delete the one from the Glo. Right now, I've got 938 books loaded, and I'm three-quarters of the way through the one I'm reading. That's not quite a thousand, but it's close enough for the nickname. ![]() Plus, I've got a pretty big backlog in Limbo, enough that I wish there was a good way to automate the processing. Unfortunately, I know that books are just too individual to submit to automation. Thankfully - if indeed that's the right word - the new restrictions on Kobo contest codes have slowed down my ebook acquisition, so maybe I can start getting more stuff out of Limbo and onto the reader, making the nickname reality and then an understatement. ![]() |
