Yikes! I'm sure it's not a good idea for a writer to end up in a 75-book contract. Some authors can barely handle a two-book contract. But... 75?!

I visited the Ellora's Cave website for the first time in ages. It needs some work. They were trying to persuade readers to buy directly from their site! Why would they want to do that? I went there to find out how many ebooks I had in my library. I had three, probably because I use to buy from them in the Dark Ages, before they let you have a "library" or "bookshelf." It took them way to long to realize customers needed and deserved that. By that time, I was buying from Fictionwise, Samhain, Loose Id, etc. (Particularly publishers who recognized the m/m market instead of believing it did not exist.)

And this... On the page where you can download your ebooks, for each book, there is a table with the formats you can download. In the "Software or applications" column, the text says "Install lorem ipsum." Install lorem ipsum?! Good God! Did they put that thing together and forget to update the boilerplate text?

YA reviewer Ashleigh Paige tweeted about how a couple of new adult authors were happy that Dear Author was sued. Never mind that other authors are being screwed over by Ellora's Cave. They're happy that the eeevil blog that dared to give them bad reviews has been sued! New adult my foot. They sound more like big babies. And I'm annoyed with myself for buying some of their books.

Of course, I'm sure some of their tweets and FB posts will magically disappear. Because nothing is permanent the Internet, right? No one will ever think to get a screen cap. Uhm...

I have always felt Jane took campaigning against Beautiful Disaster too far. I can see Jamie's side but I do not think it was appropriate to respond in public her feelings but hey this is Jamie we are talking about again, She is bold. The other one Mummert she did get a bad review from DA but it wasn't that bad so I agree with you on that point.

I'll never touch a Ellora's Cave title again, unless the authors are finally with another publisher or self published. Not putting a dime in that one's pocket.

And any of these authors cheering the lawsuit? There something not quite right in their head. Jamie McGuire. That's a special one. Not hard to stay away from that one, I hated Beautiful Disaster. No loss.

All the special snowflakes being gleeful. Karma will take care of that eventually.

I feel absolutely horrible for the authors caught up in this mess. I would hope their fans will follow them wherever they might publish and however they might publish. Laurann Dohner though, holy cow thats a huge contract she has to fulfill. Her books are a bit like candy to me. But I am not going to get them while she is published with Ellora's cave. No knowing if she gets paid even.

I emailed Jenny Schwartz to ask if Curses and Confetti would be available at Kobo or google. She did confirm it's Amazon only. But she said she didn't want me to miss out and sent a PDF and ePub version with her response. Wasn't that so sweet?

You're welcome. Just keep in mind, if you ever have trouble downloading from Amazon, disable the plug-in temporarily. What I read specifically mentioned digital music, but I'm trying to keep it in my mind, just in case.

And my proceeds are going back to "Cat Welfare", the shelter where I got my cat. We're such pet softies here, aren't we?

My pets all come from local animal shelters, and they are wonderful. My Amazon Smile goes to a local animal shelter as well... the one I got my cats and my dog from.

That is quite generous of her. I love it when authors do something like that. What books of hers did you read that made you want to buy more?

I don't think Jamie is fully informed on the issue. She spoke out about the lawsuit before knowing everything which was not a smart thing to do. How she feels about DA though I think her feelings are justified. It was an ugly attack on her not a bad review. I am still scratching my head on why she was attacked and yet there are several books on DA that are much worse and they have a good review.

Yeah, I'll never figure out those things. I know a lot of readers in general (not just review bloggers) are criticizing that type of New Adult book by saying "What idea will young women get from these stories?!" But then how many Harlequin Presents with obnoxious heroes have gotten great reviews from the same people? Or how many paranormal romances with over-the-top aggressive alpha heroes? Is it OK as long as he's a tycoon or a werewolf? Young women won't get "ideas" from those stories? Do all these readers thing young women are that stupid anyway? (I read Woodiwiss and Rogers in high school but knew enough to stay away from men like the ones they wrote about.)

But sometimes readers almost get fixated on how much they hate a certain author, a certain type of hero, or whatever, and they have to tell the whole world about it. Kind of like when you ask me about Diana Palmer's Heart of Ice.


Still, in fights over reviews (and outright attacks and tweets), authors would be better served by ignoring the crap that's flung around. Or even laughing at it if they can. They will be the ones who come out smelling like roses.

I didn't see any attack in that review at all. She is going through the characters and story. She gave it a C, which is still a pretty decent rating I think. I gave it a 1 star. Heck, she even calls the voice of the author compelling, so I am at a loss to see any attack here or why McGuire was flying off the handle.
I don't buy her being clueless about the lawsuit. This isn't the first time she stuck the foot in the mouth. There is a pattern.

I rarely agree with the reviews on Dear Author anyway, like I said, BD was a 1 star for me, I found it that bad, Jane gave it a C. Thats like a 3 star, which I give pretty decent books. Often their B's and A's are something I don't like and often their D's are stuff that I didn't find that bad. Still fun to check out the stuff. Once in a while I do find a gem this way.
