Has anyone tried to buy an ebook from Kobo that has no available formats listed? Under the 'Read On This' heading there are no devices listed at all. Very strange.

Yes, the ebook is in PDF format. I buy very, very few PDFs. Look for the BlackBerry name for epubs (using the new website).

From memory I've bought a book that had no details about what devIces it could be used on and in fact the book couldn't be downloaded because it didin't exist.

That is, the publisher hadn't provided Kobo the book data, the contents of the book. However I got charged for it and so Had to go through the refund process.

Thats what I was concerned about. I know I could ask for a refund but its a hassle and takes days, in my experience, so I avoid the need to ask for a refund if possible
The book isnt much dearer at Amazon, I'll just buy it there.

How does one remove an eBook sample from the library such that you can then go back to the eBook's listing and add the sample back to your library again?

Sorry, but that is not always the case. I've seen a number of eBooks that don't have blackberry listed that are downloading as ePub.

Try this one since it's free (have to be set for the United States). It does not show Blackberry as one of the devices yet it is downloadable as a true DRM free ePub.

Yeah, open drm free epubs are an exception to the Blackberry rule. When the Blackberry logo is present then the ebook is an ade drm-epub. There is a post in this thread (many hundereds of posts ago) with all the details of Kobo's ebooks types. You can also use the preview button.

"Here is fast way to identify the type of ebook on Kobo's new website:

1) For ade epubs: Go to the 'Read this On' section located on the bottom right corner of the ebook page. If the 'Read this On' has Blackberry then it is an epub (full line: DESKTOP, eREADERS, ANDROID, TABLETS, IOS, BLACKBERRY, WINDOWS). Check via the preview button in your library to verify ade epub; I will skip this step though.

2) For kepub or an open epub: If Blackberry is absent from the 'Read this On' section , (full line: DESKTOP, eREADERS, ANDROID, TABLETS, IOS, WINDOWS) then it is a very good chance it is a kepub or an open epub. Click on the preview button and goto your library. As GeoffR has indicated, if the download option is Epub (DRM-free), then you have an open epub. If there is no download option, then you have an kepub.

3) For PDFs: the 'Read this On' section is blank then it is likely a pdf. There is no preview button for pdfs. Check with Kobo CS before purchasing. I don't as I know that it is a pdf.


For Kobo, these three steps are unnecessary and we should not have to resort to a preview button (personally, I do not want a preview button), instead tell us up front on the main page what format we are about to purchase."

*sigh* I didn't buy a single book this time around because the codes were lousy and there wasn't anything in the US or UK store I wanted. I'm suffering from withdrawal symptoms even though I still have thirty books to read from the book-buying binge I went on earlier this summer when there were good codes that could be used anywhere. It's so bad that I've almost pulled the trigger one using one of the 35% comeback codes in the India store--just because I could use it! The discount wasn't enough for me to do it, but still!

If you only have a TBR backlog of 30 bought books, you're not in serious trouble yet. But there is always the Ebook Buying Addicts' Support Thread if you feel that you need to talk about it.
