Question Create Link to External Files

I know its possible to hyperlink to webpages, this opens up your browser "no problem"

I would like to hyperlink to images on my laptop (not in the epup file) so they open in an external program. e.g. link to a jpeg in "My Documents" of a map and have it open in "Windows Photo Viewer"

Is this possible??? Thanks

Not everyone runs Windows. Not all devices are connected to the internet. It would only go to your laptop where the pictures are.

Why bother with epub when you can make a web page that will do the job?

Maybe because it 'interferes' with the OPs normal browsing patterns

@RKEP71 - you need to put a file uri into the Link Target box as in "file:///E:\Documents\My Pictures\Map.jpg" that will insert the following into the code.

Code:
<a href="E:\Documents\My Pictures\Map.jpg">|</a>
You need to enter a label - eg My Map - where you see the '|' (sigil will position the insertion point there after you OK the link dialogue box). When you save the file, Sigil will replace spaces %20 etc.

In your EPUB viewer click on My Map and up it should pop in Windows Photo Viewer, assuming that's your default viewer for images

Didn't the OP want to have the outside file launched with an outside program?

BR - Thanks for the help! I have tried what you advised. For some reason it changes the label as you'd expect to blue underlined but it dosent link???

By the way as you say it is for personal use and to mrmikel there is a reason for my madness

Madness is a often a good reason for doing mad things - its how I keep my sanity.

Aaah - what viewer are you using, I use the calibre viewer. And the end of the day its the viewer that has to know what to do with a file url.

BR - I have been playing around with your advice. It seems file:/// has to be capitals FILE:///

I am now in business, thanks again

How odd. What on earth prompted you to even try such a thing? If you enter a web url does it have to be HTTP://

For future reference - and in case someone should come looking at the thread, what viewer are you using?

No http:// is lowercase, weird eh!

The viewer I'm using is the original (last update) Sony Reader Library 3.3.00.07130. It may not have all the features but the view you see is exactly the same as the view you'll get on the PRS-T1 which helps a great deal when designing/editing your e-books.

This is a similar question I have my folders in
Images
Styles
Text
Videos
I have lots of videos that make the epub too big so can I create a folder called Notes_on_script
and point to the xhtml file from within the main page i.e change
<p class="para1"><span class="span7"><a href="../Text/Notes_on_Script.xhtml"
to point to the same file but in the new Notes on script folder
to something like
<p class="para1"><span class="span7"><a href="../Notes_on_script/Notes_on_Script.xhtml"

You bumped a 10 year old thread?

If you are building epub3, video resources can be stored on a separate web server and the resource is marked as external to the epub.

But this has nothing to do with Sigil itself. It is a general epub question. You should ask your question in our epub forum and not here so that more people both can see and possibly respond to your question.
