Because you can have your books handled by Calibre Companion and not the reading app. CC handles the books better.

PocketBook and other brands mentioned by previous posters. Their flagship PocketBook Ultra (and some older models) has jack for headphones.
You can listen to mp3 player and use TTS in 22 languages. There are 40 voices available for download, including child voice. It also has a camera and an [almost unusable] OCR software built in. It is not Android device but a pure reader with Linux on it. There are lots of dictionaries, some third party programs and other stuff available for it. |

![]() I just gave examples of issues found in other fields where the manufacturers and studio equally consider DRM. Since the MicroUSB gained a giant leap (not least because of the EU Directive), nothing prevent the manufacturers to disable the USB port, and leave it for charging, or as restricted use port (for upgrades, if not WiFi/3G). I would refer to iPod if this is familiar to you. |

I guess some feel that some feel they are knowledgeable if they are rude.

unless you mean by moving the card to a new device. And it is just as easy to simply reload a new device from calibre. No irreplaceable loss, although you could conceivably lose a few minutes of your life staring at a circular icon because you have nothing else to do while waiting for the one-time-transfer to happen. |

PocketBook is the best selling reading device in my country. They have stopped trying to compete in USA, because it is very difficult to compete against Amazon that sells e-ink devices for very tiny profit (*IF* they make profit on cheapest, add-supported kindles at all), making it up on books and content. The OCR capability is awful. Camera is mediocre at best. I do not have use for most of the apps that are available. I do use their 14 e-book format support, SD card, nested directory library, user-installed fonts, dictionaries and, most importantly, configurability of the text presentation, such as fonts, font sizes, margins, hyphenation, justification, ... I have owned a Kindle and other brands. You haven't even seen a PocketBook device. |

I still don't care. I am more than happy with my Kindle. Which has dictionaries, nested collections structure, user-installed fonts, unlimited format support via calibre, more onboard memory than I will ever fill up even without an SD card (read: a HELL of a lotta books)... And you still shouldn't expect conversations to gravitate around whatever the Pocketbook does. It is generally understood that when most people think about ereaders, they are not thinking about fringe devices, regardless of whether or not they are the most popular device in any given country that doesn't happen to contain the majority of ereaders bought and sold. When I ask "what ereaders offer audio" it is among the less helpful answers to point out some insignificant device made by an insignificant manufacturer and used by a vanishingly small percentage of even knowledgeable ereader nerds, as though that is somehow supposed to demonstrate that Amazon should jump on the bandwagon and offer it too (again). |

Could you clarify "parts of Europe"? It perhaps inadvertently resembles a dodge.
