Why blame Microsoft for a stupid decision made by B&N?

B&N did have it where you could download it to your PC and then to a reader but with their 'change' in policy you can no longer do that. So Amazon still has more options than B&N now do.
Actually, you CANNOT download a book from Amazon without using an Amazon program unless you have a Kindle registered to your account and the software versions do not count.. I have to use Kindle for PC in order to download from Amazon. I don't have a Kindle registered to my account so Amazon won't allow a direct download.

I've never owned a Kindle, yet I purchase the majority of my books from Amazon. They get downloaded to my PC with the Kindle for PC program. When I purchase a book, my choices are to deliver to Kindle for PC, or to the Cloud Reader, or to my Android Tablet. I always select Kindle for PC since I prefer keeping all my books in one location in Calibre. But you definitely do not need to own a Kindle, just register your Kindle for PC program or Android apps on your phone or tablet to your Amazon account and you're set to download.

I have never owned a Kindle or Nook and have made many purchases from both Amazon and Barnes&Noble. I do all my purchasing from my PC and disinfect each purchase right after downloading. I still do.

Kindle for PC is an Amazon program. You can't download without either an Amazon program or a Kindle device.

Yes, but it doesn't have to work. Just have a serial number ....

Lots of old, defunct K1's out there (customer service can help you register one, tell them you don't have wifi).

No K1 had wi-fi to begin with, they all had 3G instead, through Sprint.

Might be more cost effective to get a cheap tablet. If it has Google Play access, then most stores are covered.

Do remember that if you are downloading to a K1 or K2, you will be getting an older format file. Not going to get a KF8 formatted file without a newer device connected to your account.

Does the greasemonkey script work on Nook UK? I can't see any download links on the My Library page.

For the record, and I downloaded about 750 books with the Tampermonkey/Greasemonkey scripts: AT LEAST 2 of the books I downloaded with the alternate download button were samples for completely different books. It took some sleuthing to find what those books were supposed to be; luckily, I'd already downloaded them before.

John is correct. If you do not have a Kindle Reader you can not download directly to your computer. You have to use Kindle for PC instead.

This is really too much, Kindle for PC and Nook for PC are programs on your PC. The books they let you read are downloaded to folders on your PC. The files in those folders can be disinfected and read using any reader or device that can read the format. The download is directly to your computer.

Why are you all trying to make this more of a problem than it actually is?

Luck;
