What they don't say is that when the next book in a series is published, the previous one will go down to the same price as the rest - mostly, in this case, US 7.99, and the new one will be selling for the higher US 14.99 price. In other words, now that Festive in Death is the 'current' book in the series, that is US 14.99 and the earlier one has been reduced.

I haven't looked to see if the same applies to the rest of the '50% reduction' books.

I'm not buying anything

Looking at what other people have been saying about how many books they haven't been buying this month made me stop and look at my purchases.

A quick glance at my credit card statement for July purchases shows 75 items for Kobo, that was a month when there were plenty of good codes about.

The statement for August purchases shows 28 items for Kobo, when the better codes were considerably less.

In the current competition period I have made no purchases from Kobo.

I guess it all comes down to whether Kobo would prefer to sell 75 books at 60% or 70% off, or 28 books at 50% off, or no books at 25% off.

Does anyone know who pays for the discount when they offer codes, is it Kobo, or is it the author?

To my knowledge, the answer should be "indefinitely."
This coupon was available some time at the end of 2013, then became unavailable, then available again on about the beginning of this month.
On the other hand, the coupon I mentioned in my last post (kobojp) was available for more than half of a year, then suddenly became 1000 yen off at the end of August, then unavailable to now.

By the way, since you have registered a Rakuten account, you could use this coupon (also 1000 yen off) instead:

http://books.rakuten.co.jp/event/e-b...-debut-coupon/

This is a "RaCoupon" which can only be used in http://books.rakuten.co.jp/e-book/ (NOT rakuten.kobobooks.com), and must be tied with a Rakuten account.
This coupon can be acquired before 9/30 9:59 (Tokyo time) and would expire at 10/31 23:59.

Thanks, I was able to get a free book with this code. Except that it is only available through a Kobo device or Kobo app as I have neither I'll have to wait until I do.

I purchased the book from Rakuten not Kobo Japan. They are two separate entities. Those from Rakuten do not appear in Kobo for PC.

Edit: Actually neither appear in Desktop PC.

Some more medium value coupons. I hope someone can use them. There doesn't seem much point when PERKOPOLIS still works in Canada.

I asked the same question in this thread and was told Kobo pays for it, at least for the contests. But yep I'm with you. I have quite a few books on my 'to buy' list but I've yet to spend a penny with Kobo this month, whereas last month with the shareable codes I bought a ton, many of which I didn't even need. I'd hoped the last contest meant that selling many books dirt cheap worked out better, but it was probably just a glitch. In any case for this contest I'm voting with my wallet, so to speak.
