Where'd my post go? The one eschwartz quoted part of in post #42?

Ah, well. The main thrust of it still exists in that quotation.

Essentially, Amazon accuses the Big Players of doing to Amazon what Amazon is doing to the Indie publishers.

I'm far more aware of indie publishers now than I was, say, five years ago. I buy more from them, there are more of them, and they seem to be thriving.

Huh? Amazon wasn't accusing anybody.
The idiots filing the suit were accusing Amazon of being in bed with the big publishers to put *them* out of business.
After everybody else in the courtroom stopped laughing, the case was dismissed.
(More or less.)

Ebook-edit is live!

From http://calibre-ebook.com/whats-new:

Quote:
Release: 1.15 [13 Dec, 2013]
New Features
  • A new book editor, capable of editing files in the EPUB and AZW3 (Kindle) formats
Right click on any book in calibre and choose 'Edit Book', to edit e-books in the EPUB and AZW3 formats. The new editor allows you to edit the HTML/CSS and images inside the ebooks in a seamless fashion, with live preview of your changes and many helpful automated tools for checking the book for errors, editing the table of contents, merging, splitting, bulk renaming and so on. See http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/edit.html for more details and help using the new editor. Note that the editor is a completely new codebase and is still being actively developed, so expect a few bugs and many new features in the near future. However, the editor as it stands is extremely useable and useful today. Note that it replaces the old 'Tweak Book' feature in calibre. If you want the old Tweak Book back, it has been renamed to 'Unpack Book', you can go to Preferences->Toolbars and add it back. Happy holidays!

Yes I can see why you'd avoid Amazon because of their forced tie-ins.
Hmm. I suppose I really should have come back to this thread sooner, but the fact is, that's not true of B&N or Kobo. Every book you buy from them is downloadable to ANY hardware. If it's DRM'd, the hardware has to run Adobe Digital Editions, but that's not an issue, since all the hardware does. DRM is evil, shouldn't exist, but that's a whole other issue.

Amazon downloads, otoh, are for Kindle software only.

Yup! The good old "Amazon must bow before Zod...er, Adobe..." meme from 2009.

As I said, that horse is dead, buried (along with Adept's relevance), and reincarnated.

You seem not to have noticed the actually important part. I download from Amazon even though I don't have a Kindle, because I have the ability to strip the DRM AND convert the book format. That's not legal in the US. As for kindle software being available on "tons of hardware", none of that hardware is other dedicated e-readers, while nothing ties your B&N or Kobo download to their hardware.

So Barnes and Noble is using regular ADE now? If true, that sucks--I don't use ADE and have no interest in starting to, so that cuts out Barnes and Noble as a possible source of DRM'd books. Looks like I'm down to Amazon exclusively.

So in nutshell: Kindlebooks available on tons of hardware, ADE epubs available on tons of hardware. Yes, I can see why the one DRM is less evil than the other.

And for the record.... Kobo's proprietary kepub format (and its similarly proprietary, non-Adobe DRM) is absolutely an attempt to lock you into their hardware. And the number of kepub-only ebooks is only growing.

Books from B&N can only be used by B&N hardware or apps not any reader. They use a different drm then regular ADE.
