Once I started doing that, my mental health improved significantly. On the other hand, there is a portrait of me up in the attic that is just getting older and older, and uglier and uglier every year!

Well .... I nearly offed myself last night in one of those freak home accidents that nobody believes can happen.

My reading chair is a standard Lazy Boy recliner - with the foot rest always up for cats to use. I was calmly reading and decided to get up to go to the kitchen to replenish the ice cubes in my glass. Somehow, as I swung my feet down to floor level, the left leg of my PJs caught the corner of the foot rest, pitching me head first into the carpet with my leg firmly attached to the recliner - which pulled the recliner forward onto me ... already splatted face down into the carpet. Fortunately, my only injury is a rather nasty bruise on my left calf - the corner of the foot rest ended up resting on my leg.

But .... my glass remained upright and unspilled on the carpet .... go figure.

I restored the recliner to its upright position, strapped a cold pack onto my calf, and got new ice cubes. Jeeesh! Imagine calling 911:

"Hello ... please state the nature of your emergency."
"I'm trapped on the floor underneath my recliner."
"Have you been drinking sir?"
"Well, yes, just one nightcap, but you won't believe how this happened!"

"I'm sure we won't sir,"

I'm glad to hear you're not seriously hurt. Obviously the lesson here is not to wear pyjamas.

I've never been partial to nightshirts - too drafty!

The problem is that they just don't make good PJs for those skinny chicken legs - they could make them skinny enough, but then how would you get those three-toed feet through them?

I've been roosting my tail feathers in that chair for over 10 years - and this has NEVER happened before ..... sigh ...

Glad to hear that you came away from this without major injury. Chair-related accidents are actually one of the more frequently encountered, right behind walking into open kitchen cabinet doors, and actually because of the resulting body positions, can be really dangerous. Adding in the need to 'never disturb our cats,' we really do get into some odd contortions when trying to stand up!

The glass was upright! Excellent! Still no one has come to the equivalent of telling 911 that I had lost a Dutch boy in a 700 acre park. They started telling ME Dutch boy (in a can) jokes. For the none us participants there used to be dutch boy paints and many jokes around it

There was some of that, running refrigerators, offers to take me where I could wear a nice tight fitting jacket. ..

The irony of the situation was all of my years in search and rescue, being a vet, andbeing pretty well trained and level headed and taking girl scouts to the woods numerous times and successfully returning them. There was also the knowledge that this kids father was a judge at the international court at the Hague. Visions of international incidents were dancing through my head. These kids had only been in country a little over a week and in the immediate area 2 days. The next day I took them to the county fair and had dog tags made up with my address and phone number on them. Did that with every other exchange student I had over the years. Best welcoming gift to the kids ever!

Just to get back to Vent and Ranting ....
and ref to whomever mentioned Miles Vorkosigan and Bel Thorne .....
can I rant that, after reading 9 of these books in the last 15 days (and that's counting 4 short stories as only 1 book) -- there's only ONE book left before I run out of the series? THAT's a serious problem.

Okay, maybe that's a third world problem, but .....
