We have some quite large spiders native to NC - a few years back a nursery web spider took up residence on our front porch - her body was 4" long, and her leg span over 6" - we had to terminate her - she had an egg sac and was very aggressive - challenging anyone trying to climb the steps onto the porch. |

Looking for a not too expensive electric travel kettle. I just noticed that the hostel makes no mention of one available in the rooms. There is a kitchen available for guests but it's only open until 10pm.

To make a long story short, I was supposed to be pond sitting 4 koi but 3 died because he couldn't keep them Aerated enough. So he brought the lone survivor over and I now have a 15 year old probably 30 pound koi. The pond is close to a half acre, should I get him buddies? |

I've just found my stash of UK plugs, so I've cut off the plug of a Dutch power strip and I'm about to put a UK plug on it. That will make it a lot easier next week to get things charged without resorting to using various converter plugs (also my experience of hotel rooms is that they often have only a couple of power outlets).
I did this when studying in England. At first my fellow Dutch students laughed at me but after a couple of weeks I earned a bit on the side to make these for other foreign students ![]() Those, however were were strips with 10 outlets, which is too big for a holiday. I did make one for travel but I can't find it. It probably ended up in a box last year during the clean up after the fire. |

Shivering. It got down in the 40's last night (Fahrenheit) and despite socks and a sweater, I'm cold. It's just the contrast - once I get moving I'll warm up. Today is my "early" day at the library.

When I was planning a trip to the UK B.E. (Before Ereading) I always spend a lot of time making lists of the books I wanted to buy, because they're a lot cheaper in the UK than in the Netherlands.
Now I panic if I have not only enough books on my Kindle but if I have the right ones. Up until I leave I keep adding books because you never know what you're in the mood for. I also made sure I have money on my credit card to buy ebooks if necessary ![]() |

Um. I have 47 index pages of books (mostly free ones). Times about 10 books per page. Ok, maybe many of those aren't good, but SOME are. I've also got a "collection" of 10 index pages (times 10 books) of books I've actually paid for and WANT to read. No, wait -- that's the "current" collection. I have no idea how many books are in my "paid-real-money" collection.
I've ALWAYS got plenty to read!! Oh, and this is at least my 4th kindle. On each of the other three, I had similar huge numbers of books, which I did NOT carry onto the new kindle. (The free ones; the paid ones I DID bring along.) |

The developer thought the update routine that maintains its database might be dying with an out-of-memory condition, because of the sheer number of books. It actually looks like a corrupted database file was the culprit - I uninstalled the app and re-installed, redoing the config and specifying where eBooks lived, and it rebuilt its database and all is well. Since storage is on a 32GB external card, I see no reason not to have everything on it, but "everything" at this point is thousands of volumes. ______ Dennis |

Trying to catch up on MobileRead. It's been a very busy day for me. Took my son to his doctor's appointment, when to the grocery store, cut the grass in the fenced-in area with the push mower, washed the dishes, cut the grass in the larger area of our yard and the traffic circle with the riding mower, and banned two spammers. Well, actually just one spammer pretending to be two people.
The good thing about cutting the grass is that I got to listen to some more in an audiobook I'm reading while I was doing it. Audiobooks make mowing the lawn a pleasure. Of course, I have to wear ear muffs over my ear buds to muffle the sound of the mowers, but that's a small price to pay. |

Watching rainbows dance around my walls again! I have a faceted crystal hanging in my window, but the sun only rises at the correct angle twice a year for 2-3 months each time. It would seem that the 'Autumn' sun's angle has finally reached the point where the crystal can capture its rays and project them onto my wall. Welcome back, Roy G. Biv!

Sharpening my swords... or, at least, the modern equivalent of that task; tightening the electrical connections, adjusting the tension, and testing them, tightening the handles, sanding out nicks in the edges of the blades, and polishing the guards.

Just got back from taking my eldest son to a university open day (Salford). Really interesting and quite life affirming to see so many young enthusiastic people just starting out in their independent lives.
I wish I was 18 again (but knew what I know now!). |
