Question Help a 'newbie"

I have no idea what device to buy. I want to get one for my husband for his birthday/christmas, but I know that he wants one with 'back light' so he can read in bed without turning on a light. Are there any such devices? He used to use his Palm, as did I, but the print is so small and the page turns so many that it is not really practical. Plus the number of books available seems limited.

Hi! Get him one like mine, and he will love it. The backlight was the dealmaker for me also. Click the wiki tab up at the top of the page and also go to www.ebookwise.com

There is no shortage of content available. In fact, the numbers of free and purchased ebooks gets overwhelming sometimes.

Enjoy!!

Personally I would recommend not getting a back lit LCD reader. There are ways to light eInk readers such as a book light. The Sony 505 has the optionally available what they call a "light wedge" cover that will light the Sony 505. And the Sony 700 has an integrated light.

Welcome to MobileRead!

There are no e-ink devices that are back lit (need a lamp or a booklight). There is one that is side lit. The lack of back lighting tends to make reading on e-ink easier on the eyes, less eye strain.

There are LCD based devices that are back lit (closer to your Palm experience).

Would you mind answering a few questions.

- what country are you in? (not all readers are available in all countries)
- how computer savvy is your husband? (format conversion may be required)
- do you have a price range you would like to stay in?

I think that the LCD devices are too small and limited.
My husband is quite computer literate-we both retired from computer related fields
We are in the USA
Price - under 300 if possible

Some of the LCD devices are larger than you might think. Here are a couple.

Jetbook - $310
eBookwise - $140

For e-ink screens take a look at the e-ink reader matrix. The least expensive e-ink machine, I believe is the Sony 505 at around $300. For another $60 you could have a Kindle.
