Amazon show zero interest in a model outside the vanilla 6". If they were going to release a 6.8" or a 5" like Kobo, they would have done so by now. Variety and choice is not part of Amazon's e-ink strategy. For that, one must look to models produced by non-American companies.

It seems the Basic Kindle can once again be ordered, with or without ads. Amazon's page says they'll ship in 2 or 3 weeks.

The "will ship in X weeks" on various Kindles has sometimes, in the past, been a leading indicator of a new Kindle announcement. This gives me a small amount of hope that something's coming in the next 2-3 weeks. It could possibly be a new low-end kindle, or perhaps borrowing from the playbook of others, the PW2 could could continue on in the low-end slot & a new PW3 could take over the existing PW2 slot.

-- just speculating, tea leaf reading, wild-axe-guessing... whatever (because I could be interested in something new too).

I hope there is a new Kindle but the fact is that my old Kindle is so very good that I'm not sure I'll buy one. I might. I might not. But if there is one there'll be lots and lots to talk about for a while.

Yes, I'm pretty much in a similar spot-- my Kindle Touch works fine & only now and then do I think that self-illuminating would come in handy. Plus the PW always seemed like a bit of a step back with the loss of Text-to-speech.

Thanks to this forum I discovered the lightning deal on a refurbished PW2. Managed to order one as a backup. I was on a trip and thought I had lost my Kindle. Thankfully I found it in the boot of the car. How did it get there?

I am still rooting for a PW3 coming out in the next few weeks.

It probably doesn't mean anything, but the PW2 (Wi-Fi) page on Amazon says "In stock but may require an extra 1-2 days to process."

It seems sort of odd, but probably just a backlog issue, maybe from people ordering the new 4GB versions.

The PW2 (3G) page is normal-- in stock, no mention of any delay.

Yeah I don't understand why some people are bothered by speculation? Since i've owned my first Kindle in 2010, they've released a new one each year, so it's a pretty good guess they'll come out with some sort of refresh (unless you believe Amazon is killing the Kindle off and never releasing a new model). We're into September now, so if it happens it should be within the next month or so.
