Hi guys, especially Rev Rob, JSWolf, rspr, DNSB, and DavidFor

Where would you create a thread of its own for this interesting conversation?
- Kobo reader (general) forum, because it concerns how to read and edit epubs for kobo
- Kobo developper, because it talks about the software
?

Well, yes, it has gone somehow offtopic, (and techy and freaky ) but it started pretty "on-topic".

Let's summarize for common world people:
  • I posted an "issue" still present in FW 3.8.0 about duplicated entries in ToCs for sideloaded kepubs. (epubs are free of this "issue").
  • That's not an issue with Kobo software because it's probably a bug in the book itself.
  • (... some weird discussion here... toc is red, but ncx is yellow... ...)
  • (... more weird discussion here about epub3 against epub2... epub3 is blue but epub2 is orange ...)
  • But then, there's probably a bug in Kobo navigation bar. This problem arises with books that contain links in the ToC through fragment ids. In plain words: in books which don't have each "chapter" in a different and dedicated html file. It happens if the epub, (and therefore the kepub), has chapters, divisions, sections, articles, (whatever), grouped in books, parts, tomes or whatever.

push the toc ncx conversation into a new thread epub2 epub3

Hi arspr

Thanks for your summary, it exactly the foundation of a nice thread. I am also struggling on epub3 metadata specification in the epub forum... and I consider this topic as really important.

I just thought about how easier it will be in 3 or 6 months, when one of us will look for this conversation, and have hundreds of posts results instead of "hopefully" a simpler "search in title" if a thread had been created. Well, I put the keyword in my post title, so... I am happy

Regards
François
PS: anyway, the red and orange might loose against the blue and yellow, ... but they all loose against the dark force of Kobo, I am afraid...

Also lost in the ePub 2/3 and ToC talk is the search problem I talked about in posts #143 and #148. I was hoping someone else had had this problem and find out whether Kobo was aware of it. I had one or two responses but nothing new since the day I posted it, surely I'm not the only one with the problem; it affects every ePub I try to search in and is quite frustrating. Maybe I need to start my own thread? I thought of doing it but didn't want to clutter the forum with another thread about the 3.8 release.

I think this has been covered elsewhere. The same bug affects annotations in epub ebooks. Basically whatever chapter was last selected is the chapter shown for annotations, search, etc.

And according to davidfor, Kobo is aware of it.

See his message at https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...postcount=1051 in the Kobo Future Firmware features request sticky.

Regards,
David

Yes, I saw that but that's just one part of it; I can live with all results being listed in the same chapter but the search results are all jumbled about, the first, second, third, etc items on the result pages are not not the first three etc appearances of the word but maybe 15th, 8th, 21st, etc (it changes each time). That makes it useless when I'm searching for something like the first appearance of a character or location or the last appearance prior to the one I'm at. This only happens in ePubs, kepubs show them perfectly but I only sideload ePubs, the only reason I loaded a few kepubs was to test this search problem/bug.
It's quite frustrating to me not to be able to use the search feature, it's one of my favorite things about ebooks. I may end up giving up the light control feature on my HD and roll back to 3.3 if I can figure out how to do it, lol! (I've seen the instructions, just not sure I can do it without screwing things up. )

Just after you figure out how to go back to 3.3 and actually do it, Kobo will update you to 3.9.

The same scrambling happens with annotations. An annotation that I remember as the 3rd one I entered ends up on the 4th page of annotations. I use Sigil's search function to locate the annotations when I am correcting the problems so not that big an issue but still annoying.

Well it's good to know I'm not alone and that it manifests itself in other ways; I'm hoping Kobo will fix it soon, but I'm not holding my breath.
