2nd Tier TOC and Links Do Not Work Correctly After Uploading to Nook Press

After uploading my books to my Nook Press account as ePubs, my second tier table of contents items and all internal links do not function correctly. Second tier TOC items land at the beginning of the chapter they are subordinate to rather than at the target within the chapter, which are all at the beginning of sections. And internal links land at the beginning of the chapter in which their targets reside rather than at the targets.

This happens both in the Nook preview and in the book when it is purchased and downloaded to either my Nook Simple Touch or Nook PC. Unfortunately, I foolishly didn't test the links in preview before publishing the books, as I had thoroughly tested them before uploading.

I tested the books on my Simple Touch, Nook PC, Nook Android and ADE before uploading them to my Nook Press account and everything worked correctly; the first and second tier TOC items landed where they were supposed to and the internal links all landed at their targets.

It appears that B&N does something to the ePub files after they are uploaded. It's obviously not their reading software that is causing the problem, as the links in my ePubs work correctly in their software prior to uploading. Both books passed ePub validation.

I have an XHTML TOC as well as a toc.ncx that is set up as a two tier menu with <meta name="dtb:depth" content="2"/>. The internal links are basic text anchors aimed at a target. Each chapter is a separate XHTML file.

Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

An after thought.

I used the manuscript editor to make a minor change in the text. When asked if I wanted to publish the original uploaded manuscript or the edited manuscript, I chose the edited manuscript. Does anyone know if the original upload ePub is published, will it truly be the original file, i.e., unaltered in any way by Nook Press? If so, then it seems logical that that should resolve the problem. However, I suspect they still mess with it. I selected "Do not add the uploaded cover image.", as the ePubs already had covers, but it looks like they added them anyway, as I now have two covers in each book, with the one linked to my TOC appearing as a blank page.

The obvious finally occurred to me and I unzipped the ePub file I purchased and downloaded this morning. What a mess! I can't believe they took a perfectly good, validated ePub file and treated it like a MS Word manuscript. They totally trashed my work, I'm surprised it actually looks like what I uploaded! But now I'm not at all surprised that the tier 2 TOC items and my internal links don't work. They discarded my content.opf and toc.ncx and replaced them with files that are inadequate and faulty. They also discarded the font files for my embedded fonts, eliminated my directory structure and put what was left into one folder. Oh, and what was left was not my XHTML files, it was a collection of illogically named files containing the content of my XHTML files and subdivided by whatever their program decided was "logical."

As I asked above, can I avoid this by selecting "Publish the file I uploaded."? And if so, do I need to add a thumbnail somewhere? I noticed that they added two images: one with large_ appended to the file name of the cover image included in my ePub file and one with np_ appended to the file name of the cover image included in my ePub file. The first one, although named "large," is about 5% of the size of my cover image file, so I'm guessing that it's a thumbnail.

@MikeWV:

NEVER, NEVER NEVER--and, for emphasis, NEVER-take the "edited manuscript" option. Now, you've probably already figured that out, but ONLY use the ePUB "original version." Otherwise, you get this bastard stepchild problem that you have now.

That's why your book is, as they say, fershplutz. Just fix your ePUB outside of B&N, re-upload, and you'll be fine.

Hope I was helpful.

;-) Just busting you a bit, sweetie. I've been tied up a lot lately--lost my production manager to another gig--and I haven't been able to come around as much as usual.

Thanks, Hitch. You just made my day!

Although you confirmed what I suspected, it's nice to have a concise verification. And I will indeed remember to NEVER, EVER do that again.

Does anyone know how long it takes Nook Press to replace the copy on sale with the newly uploaded manuscript? It's apparently not immediate. I just bought and downloaded one of my books to make sure everything was working properly and the file I got was the old one which went on sale Wednesday evening. It's only been 1.5 hours since I uploaded new manuscripts.

I tried their support chat but they don't work on weekends.
