Folder is the official term use by some OS that happen to use a FOLDER ICON.
All instructions are to click on the FOLDER. To use other terms just confuses new users.

Directories exist in the CLI
FOLDERS exist in the GUI

Even the few Linux distros I use use FOLDERS in the GUI

So I will state for the world: Jon is mistaken in his belief that the term FOLDERS are incorrect (and Billy G has so much more $$$ than you because of providing FOLDERS to those that do not want to deal with a CLI )

You may think of it as a folder, but those of us who have been around since before the GUI know it as a directory. Just because you are using a GUI, that does not make it a different thing. What was a directory pre-GUI is still a directory now. Has it changed in what it is and what it does? Not at all. Is it the same as it was? Yes it is. So why is it a folder and not a directory? It's not, it's a directory. It always has been since the day it was invented. The only reason it's called a folder is because of the shape of the icon. But as we know, icons shapes can be changes. I could change the icon to look like a book. Would we then call it a book? Nope. That would be silly. So why are some naming it after the shape of the icon?

And with that, this ends this discussion.

Uh, uh - the term 'Folders' came from Xerox first on Alto then on the Star.

First usage I recall seeing beyond that was on Apple Lisa. Don't blame/credit Billie G with something he didn't do, you might want to blame Stevie's 'wunderkinder' Jobs & Woz for popularizing it, but credit goes to Xerox. Lisa was released in 1985 - Alto/Star were released in the '70s.

I think 'folder' might have entered the Seattle lexicon with Win 95.

Bill Gates sneered at Apple's use of the term 'folder', 'baby words' might have been his expression, that was at a corporate lunch in the late '80's.

Yes theatres and concert halls no longer have a programme you can buy at the door, now they have a program
