I have books that I didn't purchase from Amazon on my new PW. Is there any way to have it show the covers that I have dl instead of the generic one?

They probably don't have a cover embedded into the file.

Download Calibre, drag downloaded book into Calibre, select book and click 'edit metadata', then click download cover, connect your kindle and click send to kindle.

The easiest way is to install Calibre. Load the books into Calibre then use the edit metadata function to bring the cover in (assuming one exists in Goodreads or Amazon) then reconvert the file to a new mobi. Then when you send that to your kindle the cover should be embedded .

I would seeriously suggest using AZW3 instead of MOBI. It is far more capable, in many ways. Amongst which is the ability to update the cover instead of reconverting. i.e. send-to-device should update the cover.

MOBI does not understand covers, amongst other issues. The Kindle just uses the first image in the book.
Reconversion will prepend a new cover each time, so you have multiple images in the front. Which looks really ugly.

You can't email AZW3 to your Kindle, Amazon won't accept them. Also I've been re converting to mobi for years and I've never had multiple covers.

AcidWeb has 100% working solution here. Windows installer is here. No need to reconvert, just connect PW to PC, right click on MOBI/AZW3, select Open with (on Windows), select kindlebutler.exe.

.mobi has always understood covers. In Mobipocket Creator, there is a special place to insert the cover image.

Remember that all books without "Personal" tag read cover from device cache NOT file itself. In this case Kindle PW completely ignore cover embedded in file.

I wasn't clear, my fault. Calibre is putting the covers in the book, just fine, it is the graphic that shows for the collection that I would like to change, either into the first book cover, or something else.

You need edit cover in Calibre record not book file itself.
As Calibre during upload use it not cover embedded to file.
