Portable electronic devices with large screens tend to cost a fair amount more than products with smaller screens.

The Sony DPT S1 is a unique product. They were the first to the consumer market with a device with such a large e-ink screen. It is coupled with a very thin profile, and a touch screen. Its price is a function of the new technology, and lack of competition.

My advice to you as a moderator stands: Do not insult our members by calling them "stupid."

By the way, being sensitive is not gender-specific.

I'm glad that they're actually letting "normal" people buy them. If I was still DM-ing on a regular basis, I would seriously consider one come tax refund time. That's actually big enough to display the multi-column files that D&D books are. I used to carry an entire suitcase full of books for one gaming session, this would have been so much easier on my back...

I would have thought that a large screen tablet would be better than an eink device for PDF game manuals (or any reference material come to that), because the speed of page flips and scaling beats an eink device hands down. In fact, the only benefit I can see of an eink device, for that particular use, is the longer battery life.

A large screen tablet would probably be a lot cheaper than the Sony 13 inch reader too.

Let me see if I have understood this correctly.

1) You think Sony treats you as a fool by demanding $1100 for the DPT-S1.

2) You go ahead and buy it.

3) Ergo, you enjoy being treated as a fool.

Question now is, are you a cuckold or a masochist?

I believe he simply thought that sony forgot to mention any crucial features - and looking at the price there must be something extra in it. I really don't understand - if you buy something it has to be worth the money for the features you are paying for. If you buy something you cannot afford it is entirely your own fault.

Are you saying the features aren't presented properly by Sony?
I have been interested in this device for a long time but I don't believe it has a value that corresponds to the price Sony is asking, hence I have restrained myself from buying it. In my world you want to buy something you have to pay the asking price or use other people's money. If you can do neither then no purchase.

Not saying that features are not presented right. This is about the only reason lovewisdom could have been "tricked" into buying it against his will. For me it is both too expensive and too big, but that is simply because I don't need such a big display for reading novels.

I already cancelled the order, since still no shipping for around several days.

Moreover, I don't like Sony treats me as a fool to buy its function-limited but skyrocketed pricey reader.

I just keep my Kindle DX for general use. Most of time, I use paper book. No longer rely on ebooks.

A user said that this reader battery drains so fast, even shut off overnight after one charge sometimes. So before you ask $1100, make sure your product is good and honest to customers.

Great product but limited (read only pdf) and very expensive.
I imagine it with color screen ... the book-notebook of the future in every school in the world.

You don't have to buy it. Get an iPad or some other device and don't get on the nerves of the other reasonable forum users.

I would love to buy it but it's still not available in Europe. We'll wait and see.

I think that is an extremely wise decision on your part, given your past comments and dissatisfaction.

No one wants to be thought of as a fool. By cancelling your order, you have sent a clear message to Sony that you are not a fool, an action now in keeping with your user name.

Keeping your Kindle DX reader for general use is also a good idea. That's exactly what I use mine for.

Cheers!

How bad do you want it? Right now there is no direct competitor at that size eink. If you wait for Pocketbook to come out, then you at least can save some money on the Sony if the Sony is what you want. Since it is a brand new thing, it may be wise to wait a while and see until long use (at least weeks) reviews come out. If you buy now you will be an early adopter of something that might flop badly.
