Thanks, BellaZora!
I'm not familiar with Parrish, but it looks like I should get that way-- both Edgar and Shamus nominations tells me I've probably missed something.....

I think I only read the first or maybe the first and second. They are good books, a little standardized for the genre (which is not to say they aren't good, but perhaps a little predictable? But then we don't read these types of things to be surprised at the end when the bad guys get away and the main dies or anything like that...)

They're definitely worth a look if you like British procedurals.

All The Young Warriors is free (has been all week, so this may be the final day)

US http://www.amazon.com/All-Young-Warr...young+warriors

UK http://www.amazon.co.uk/All-Young-Wa...young+warriors

Here's what it says:

From a double cop-killing on the frozen streets of Minnesota to the burning sands of Mogadishu, Somali pirates and a brutal civil war, All The Young Warriors is an epic thriller spanning continents and cultures. Murder, warfare, piracy, love, betrayal and revenge – this is a white-knuckle ride for fans of James Lee Burke (the Dave Robicheaux series) and Michael Connelly (the Harry Bosch series).

Winner of the 2012 Spinetingler Award for Best Novel: Rising Star

When two of the Twin Cities' “Lost Boys” — young Somali men drafted to fight for terrorists back in the homeland — kill a pair of cops on his home turf, detective Ray Bleeker is left devastated. One of the dead cops was his girlfriend. The investigation grinds to a halt when he discovers that the young murderers have fled to Somalia to fight in the rebel army. He's at his wits' end until the father of one of the boys, an ex-gang leader called Mustafa, comes looking for answers. Bleeker and Mustafa form an uneasy alliance, teaming up to help bring the boys back home. But little do they know what Somalia has in store for them.

"a brilliant book, possibly the best novel of the year." – Les Edgerton

"written with a sureness of hand and a depth of character that are impressive. A highly accomplished crime novel exposing an often unseen world." – The Big Issue

"All The Young Warriors will grip readers who enjoy the chance to slip into a foreign culture and also those who want a page-turning thriller" – Spinetingler Magazine

"a powerful story that is both riveting and meaningful" – Crime Fiction Lover

"this book is a classic in the making" – I Meant To Read That

"All The Young Warriors is a pretty rare beast, a clever page-turner. It deserves to be a bestseller and has film adaptation stamped all over it." – Loitering With Intent

"a courageous novel that raises a lot of pertinent questions" – Dead End Follies

"Smith writes with force and clarity" – The Chicago Tribune

"Smith's version of Minnesota is no Lake Wobegon; the inhabitants are refreshingly made up entirely of the deranged, the damaged, and the doomed. If you can picture the intellectual and physical mayhem that might have resulted from a Jim Thompson and Harry Crews collaboration, you'd be on the right track. But Anthony Neil Smith is his own writer — and a very fine one, indeed." – Booklist

Queenpin by Megan Abbott
Quote:
Re-released to coincide with Abbott’s newest novel, Dare Me (2012), this eBook edition of Queenpin also includes the original short story, "Policy," that the novel was based on.*

A young woman hired to keep the books at a down-at-the-heels nightclub is taken under the wing of the infamous Gloria Denton, a mob luminary who reigned during the Golden Era of Bugsy Siegel and Lucky Luciano. Notoriously cunning and ruthless, Gloria shows her eager young protégée the ropes, ushering her into a glittering demimonde of late-night casinos, racetracks, betting parlors, inside heists, and big, big money. Suddenly, the world is at her feet--as long as she doesn't take any chances, like falling for the wrong guy. As the roulette wheel turns, both mentor and protégée scramble to stay one step ahead of their bosses and each other.

The Skeleton's Knee by Archer Mayor is the fourth book in the Joe Gunther mystery series, and is one of the US Kindle Countdown Mystery deals.

It's available for $1.99 now, and for almost a day and a half more. It is currently 7:30 am on August 30, US Pacific time. The time clicker on the webpage says it's going up to $2.99 after that. Since most of Mayor's backlist titles are $3.99, there may be some additional countdown time at $2.99, and then back up to $3.99 after that, but can't really tell.

The countdown deals are often self-pubbed, but this is a backlist title, originally published in DTB in the 90's.

Spoiler:
Quote:
When a reclusive market gardener's death proves to stem from a 20 year-old bullet wound, Lt. Joe Gunther is presented with a very cold homicide to solve. But who was the victim exactly? A deeply private man eking out an ascetic existence from a hardscrabble mountain field, Abraham Fuller was virtually unknown to his neighbors, in the manner of someone pursuing more than mere solitude. The discovery of a duffle of unmarked bills and a body buried in the garden patch suggests that Fuller had motives beyond misanthropy. Nor is it such a cold case either, as someone seems willing to kill to ensure that old secrets remain buried.

The fourth Joe Gunther mystery, The Skeleton's Knee sends Lt. Gunther on an investigation spanning thousands of miles and reaching back decades, to solve a crime whose deepest roots seem to lie in Chicago's troubled summer of 1968. It's easy to see why the New York Times bestselling Mayor has been described as producing "the best police-procedural series being written in America."

The third book in this series (Scent of Evil) was a US Kindle Countdown deal back in June, so worth keeping an eye out, perhaps, for others. And I'm now wondering if I missed the first two...

Bummer, oh well, guess I missed it! I remember reading a few of these in DTB, and enjoying them. Not to absolutely rave and go nuts about, but good reads.

All four of John Leslie's Gideon Lowry/Key West mysteries, originally published in DTB in the 1990's, are US Kindle Countdown deals right now. They are $2.99, down from $3.99 for about a day more. It's about 8:30 am on August 30, US Pacific time.

I remember reading and enjoying this series in DTB. Sort of like my post just above, nothing to totally rave about, but solid and enjoyable.

Killing Me Softly: http://www.amazon.com/KILLING-SOFTLY...dp/B00HL15RWW/
Spoiler:
Quote:
When he’s not bird-dogging AWOL witnesses for the state attorney’s office, Key West private eye, Gideon Lowry, can be found tickling the ivories in a local bar. That’s where Virginia Murphy finds him. Shrouded in somber white, she’s come back to Key West to lay a real ghost to rest – by finding out who murdered her sister, Lila, nearly forty years before. For Gideon, it’s a gig that leads him down the darker side of memory lane – where haunting snatches of his own past, like the timeless melodies he plays, linger on. Secrets linger there, too. But they’re buried as deeply as the paradise that was Florida’s landscape, now entombed beneath the concrete of Bayard Cement. The ubiquitous family business – and the wealthy, influential clan behind it – are a wall that Gideon slams up against harder and harder as he investigates his hometown’s hidden history. Doors that were once left unlocked are swinging shut in Gideon’s face, and even his hotshot-senator brother can’t – or won’t – penetrate the closed ranks. It’s enough to drive a P.I. to drink…until Virginia Murphy topples to her own untimely death.

That’s when Gideon takes the pledge – to unlock the shocking truth that Key West has concealed too long beneath its sunny, sultry surface, and to face a killer’s music and dance…

Night and Day: http://www.amazon.com/NIGHT-Gideon-L...dp/B00HL127OI/
Spoiler:
Quote:
Even Ernest himself would probably have fled Key West’s Hemingway Days celebration – a week of raucous tourists and swaggering Papa pretenders that sends the locals into hiding. Thus the low profile assumed by P.I. Gideon Lowry, playing his weekly piano gig at a waterfront hotel, fighting his daily urge for a drink. That’s where Asia – just Asia, like Madonna – finds him. Beret–clad, with lips the color of a plum, she glides into Gideon’s world on the breathless end of a classic tune. She’s left her aerie at MTV to find her estranged husband, who’s lost in the reverie surrounding his obsession: Hemingway. But Asia doesn’t want him back, she wants a divorce – and is ready to pay handsomely for it. For Gideon, locating Frank Maguire is the easiest thousand he’s ever made. Keeping the writer alive proves impossible. As the festival builds to its crescendo, mainland violence pays another nasty visit. There’s an evil dancing behind the carefree facades of Duval Street, and it will take every sun-bitten ounce of Gideon’s Conch resolve to reel it in…

Love for Sale: http://www.amazon.com/LOVE-SALE-Gide...dp/B00HL2I0DY/
Spoiler:
Quote:
Key West P.I. Gideon Lowry is no longer drowning his sorrow in rum these days. He’s just drowning…and in desperate need of a lifesaver. Enter Katy Morgan of a local escort service, just the woman to see him through another lonely night. But by the morning after, it’s Katy who hits rock bottom – her body’s found on the kitchen floor of her trailer, way beyond anyone’s help. The gruesome discovery plunges Gideon into a quarter-million-dollar mystery that leads from the treacherous currents of an offshore treasure-salvaging operation…to the dark secret haunting Katy’s family…and down the twisted island path of an explosive sex scandal.
Gideon vows to bring the truth behind Katy’s death to the surface – even if it means swimming with the sharks in a rising tide of Key West secrets, corruption, and betrayal.

Blue Moon: http://www.amazon.com/BLUE-MOON-Gide...dp/B00HKK7LIW/
Spoiler:
Quote:
P.I. Gideon “Bud” Lowry has been known to play Cole Porter tunes during his late-night piano gigs, but lately he’s had reason to finger some melancholy melodies. Besides a suspicious fire near his Duval Street home, Gideon’s old flame, successful restaurateur Gabriella Wade, is getting married. Years ago, Gideon and Gaby were a hot item, before her true love – her Blue Moon restaurant – monopolized her time. But now her wheeler-dealer fiance, Roy Emerson, is refusing to take a simple medical test and she wants Gideon to find out why.
Fired up by his misfortunes and a strong desire to protect Gaby, Gideon begins an investigation into Roy’s background that stretches from Key West to the Wild West – Wyoming. And the results are explosive. But before Gideon can open Gaby’s love-blind eyes, she and Roy elope, and disappear. With throngs of tourists descending upon Key West for the annual Halloween parade, Gideon is one native Conch who isn’t masking his fears – because if he doesn’t find Gaby soon, he’ll be left standing alone at the Blue Moon forever.

Ok, Sufue, I must ask the stupid question: What is DBT?

I've already eliminated "Dios Te Bendiga" and "Don't Text Back"as possibilities, but now I'm stumped. Hmmm, can't be "Dialectical Behavior Therapy", either.

Thanks! Yea, I guess it helps to keep the letters in the proper order. Now I'll check if the morning coffee is brewed yet and avoid any attempt to think until after the first cup.

For only about six more hours, Death of a Musketeer, the first book in the Musketeers mystery series by Sarah D'Almeida, is $0.99 as a US Kindle Countdown deal. The series is (you guessed it!) based on the Dumas books about Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and, of course, D'Artagnan.

The first few books in this series were published by Berkley in the 2000's, and I read and enjoyed at least the first three. Since I really enjoy historical mysteries, I'm looking forward to reacquainting myself with this series.

Link: http://www.amazon.com/Death-Musketee...dp/B00FUR5ISM/

Spoiler:
Quote:
April in Paris 1625. D'Artagnan, and his new friends who hide their true identities under the assumed names of Athos, Porthos and Aramis, discover the corpse of a beautiful woman who looks like the Queen of France. Suspecting an intrigue of Cardinal Richelieu's and fearing the murder will go unpunished they start investigating. But the enterprise will be fraught with danger, traps from the Cardinal, duels with guards and plotting from the king himself.
