Well hey, you responded to everyone else's results and ignored mine... not to mention that marvelous software I dug up for you.

Ricky, I know how you feel about the computers. I have a couple I haven't been able to bring myself to give up on yet... even though they've started to act a bit flaky.

Yeah, but these are computers that haven't even been plugged in or powered up in over a year. I don't use them and they are only taking up space. I can't even use the parts to repair my neighbors' computers because they tend to purchase off brand oddball PCs in which the parts are all proprietary .... so for example, I can't even get a perfectly good 500w power supply to fit in one of their's.

It just is so hard to trash this stuff.

Have you tried FreeCycle.org? Zelda put me onto them, and I've given away my AT&T DSL modem. I'm hoping to get some table lamps "in return".

Let them go, Rickey. Remember the Taoist mantra - Less is More. The whole purpose of ebooks is free the works from the bounds of wasted mass. Let the freeing flow thru the rest of your life.....

heeheehee !

(oh, and i confirm : freecycle.org is brilliant. i love them. i've gotten rid of so much stuff that way i can't even tell you. the only thing i didn't manage to give away was an old CRT 15" monitor that someone else dumped on me. i ended up lugging it over to the school (home of the world-famous SHUMS) and dumping it on them, in hopes that the SHUMS would get hooked on programming or myspace or something and SHUT THE HELL UP. sadly, no luck so far. maybe 1 monitor wasn't enough.)

Perhaps you didn't dump the monitor on them from a great enough height. It helps if the monitor is able to reach terminal velocity prior to it meeting the SHUMS.

It's sad, but true, Goodwill and Salvation Army won't take this stuff ... and even people at Freecycle don't want it. So, I'm going to stop feeling crummy that it still works and yet it is going into a landfill. I hate it that it is obsolete before its useful life is up ... but that's life and I just do NOT have the room or the reason to hang on to this stuff any more.

So there.

In answer to your question ... yep. You have to understand, there are by and far two types of people in this area. The first type is richer than god, but doesn't know the first thing about computers. They purchase new freaking expensive computers and then never get much farther with them than running the screen saver on their ginormous screens.

The second type is poorer than dirt and doesn't know anything about computers either.

However, every once in a long while, I do meet someone who likes to build an repair computers .... and I met one the other night (my plumber .... nice guy, although really far to the right politically and religiously . .. tried to convince me that the slaves held in the US prior to the Civil War were actually "happy" being enslaved .... his word not mine .... and yes, we got into a lively debate about religion and politics ... he was here five hours doing a one hour job ... but he didn't charge by the hour and it was an interesting discussion, but I digress), and he's going to take some of my gear home with him today. Yay!!

My county has a once-a-month drop-off for unwanted computer/electronics gear. The line to get rid of your stuff can be quite long, but at least the stuff isn't going straight into a landfill. I believe they send it to places that rip it apart and reclaim any bits that they can.

Mine does too, but charges 15 cents a pound for the priviledge....
