Yes Sigil 0.7.4 runs well on XP as long as I don't try and create a HTML TOC after doing other changes. 100% crash bait.

I do get occasional QT crashes . Stress: infrequent

That's odd, I use the one from this page =->> Sigil-0.7.4-Windows-Setup.exe - sigil - Windows build 0.7.4

I don't think I've ever had Sigil crash, but I would not use it as extensively as you do. However, if you have a Sigil with 5.3.1 that works on XP, that makes it even more 'interesting'.

There is. It's called 1.48 (the last Qt4 version).

On XP, You can run Calibre from source (after fixing the one line that prevents it from running under XP), but you risk it crashing, acting funny, and maybe damaging your library.

Calibre 2.x for XP

Does anybody can post somewhere any compiled binaries that can run on XP for us non-skilled people?

It doesn't seems that important now, but after some time there would be many improvements in Calibre (I guess mostly in the editor part) that the people who haven't update windows (for their own undisputed reasons), can't benefit from.

It would be nice if kovidgoyal had a directory somewhere for us to download.
Perhaps not in the Download page with big buttons, but just as a link in this forum.

TIA

Jon, I do computer support for quite a few retired people. For some of them, the choice would be between buying a new computer and eating decent meals for the next 3 months. Yes, upgrading their computers to run Windows 7 would be nice but I am not going to pay for all the needed upgrades out of my pocket. You, perhaps, are willing to pay for such upgrades for your acquaintances.

As for how I ended up doing this support? No good deed goes unpunished is the phrase that comes to mind.

Regards,
David

I was answering about Windows 7/8 being better then XP. Not about what it takes to upgrade.

It won't happen. I happen to agree. Since Qt5 is unstable then it could lead to the database getting corrupted or worse, Calibre not working. Kovid is right to not allow Calibre 2.x on XP. Supporting it would be a nightmare.

To do this, it would require downloading the source, fixing the XP block, and compiling it. That's just not something I can see anyone wanting to do.

Either run from source or if you can, upgrade your OS and if need be your hardware and the OS. You won't find anyone here who is going to compile Calibre 2.x every week just so XP users can run it.

Sorry, but on XP it is do it yourself (from source or compile) or stick with 1.48.

Oh and for those of you who have not upgraded your XP because you just didn't want to because it was working and you can afford to upgrade what needs to be upgraded (OS and/or hardware), then you have nobody to blame but yourself for not having already moved from XP.

Just to add to that sentiment, for some months after Windows 8 was released the price of an upgrade from XP, Vista or Windows 7 was only US$40 (and that gave one Windows 8 Pro too). This offer was widely publicised and worldwide. I have reports of instances where it was made available to some for around US$15.

When Windows 7 came out, the cost was half-price. That was also widely publicized. So I don't feel for most people who say that the cost to upgrade (unless they also had to upgrade hardware) is too much. It just doesn't wash when they had the opportunity to get Windows 7 & Windows 8 for cheap.
