Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions
by Edwin Abbot

Overview:
The beloved science fiction classic

In Flatland, the more sides a man has, the more powerful he is. Triangles are laborers and soldiers. Squares and pentagons are middle-class doctors and lawyers. Hexagons are nobility. Women, however, are straight lines, incapable of advancement in a two-dimensional world. Everything in Flatland is clear-cut and orderly, until the day an average citizen—a Square—dreams of a land of three dimensions. If three dimensions are possible, why not four? Or one? Soon, the Square’s provocative imagination and corresponding adventures threaten to turn the whole of Flatland against him.

First published in 1884, two decades before Einstein’s theory of relativity defined time as the fourth dimension, Edwin Abbott’s Flatland is both a prescient exploration of the unseen and a delightful skewering of Victorian social strictures.

This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

The Martian by Andy Weir is down to £2.00 at Amazon UK. A popular book here at MR, which I've had on my wishlist for some time.

Coming Home (Alex Benedict #7) by Jack McDevitt

Quote:
Thousands of years ago, artifacts of the early space age were lost to rising oceans and widespread turmoil. Garnett Baylee devoted his life to finding them, only to give up hope. Then, in the wake of his death, one was found in his home, raising tantalizing questions. Had he succeeded after all? Why had he kept it a secret? And where is the rest of the Apollo cache?

Antiquities dealer Alex Benedict and his pilot, Chase Kolpath, have gone to Earth to learn the truth. But the trail seems to have gone cold, so they head back home to be present when the Capella, the interstellar transport that vanished eleven years earlier in a time/space warp, is expected to reappear. With a window of only a few hours, rescuing it is of the utmost importance. Twenty-six hundred passengers—including Alex’s uncle, Gabriel Benedict, the man who raised him—are on board.

Alex now finds his attention divided between finding the artifacts and anticipating the rescue of the Capella. But time won’t allow him to do both. As the deadline for the Capella’s reappearance draws near, Alex fears that the puzzle of the artifacts will be lost yet again. But Alex Benedict never forgets and never gives up—and another day will soon come around...

The first three Sevenwaters books by Juliet Marillier seem to be down to £0.99 each, at Amazon UK and Kobo.

(I'm trying to find stuff to spend the Kobo coupons on, and I keep finding other bargains instead.)

There's also a free version at Amazon, Google, iTunes, and Kobo. They're not all the same edition, but they're all free.

That book is just absolutely amazing. I read it earlier this year, then read it again a few months later, and am itching to read it a third time already. I can't say there's ever been a book before I've read two or more times within a single year. I really, really hope the movie does it justice.

Make sure that you get an illustrated version. The illustrations are important to the text.

Amazon's, Google's and Barnes & Noble's have no illustrations (just checked). Kobo's probably doesn't, since it has the same cover as Google/BN does. I'm just not in the mood to strip the DRM to get it to my device at the moment to check. (The irony of a public-domain book being DRM'd is not lost on me either.) iTunes DOES, there's comments saying so on the page. Too bad I have no iDevice.

FYI regarding Flatland:
What Froide is posting here and on other threads is Open Road's free classic ebook of the day. They've got a daily email "Early Bird Books" newsletter (today's newsletter) with sale books and a free classic, with links to their specific books at all of the major stores.

I took a quick look through the first half of their edition of Flatland, but I didn't see any illustrations . Other than that, their editions seem pretty well done.

Thank you for the tip! The external links in the Wikipedia: Flatland article include illustrated versions as well as an audiobook.
