Kinda looks that way. Desperation makes you do weird things.

Well if necessity is the mother of inventions I suppose desperation is the father.

So it probably wouldn't be too good for Calibre. I wonder if Minecraft will work well on it. That would be one way to get the kids off my desk top!

Hopefully installing Linux Mint on it wouldn't be a problem. Otherwise it's still just Windows 8.

I don't know if it wouldn't work well for Calibre. I'm guessing the main issue would be with multi-tasking. But I should mention that I don't use (or ever plan to use) Windows 8.x, so maybe I'm overestimating its abilities.

Well, I've got an Asus x102ba which has the A4-1200 chip in it (2 core, 1ghz, no turbo) and that works fine with windows 8 for docs and browsing etc (Surprisingly nippy actually), So an A4 Micro-6400T (4 core, 1ghz, 1.6ghz turbo) coupled with the SSD should run with no problems (I'd prefer 4gb of ram to be honest).

I wouldn't try video processing on anything with them in, but it should be at least as good as Intel's Atom processors and seems like it will be better than the ultra low power celerons as well (And AMD's on die graphics are still better than Intel's).

That's not saying much, the reviews about the Asus with the Bay Trail CPU report that it is slower than the Haswell variants (longer boot times, a small pause when changing tabs if several open, ...). Given that Win8 is heavier than Chrome OS, I remain doubtful that this hardware will be sufficient, especially as Win systems are notorious for slowing down over time.

New Chromebox from Acer

Quote:
Taiwanese PC maker Acer is bringing Google’s Chrome operating system to desktops with a new unit that will arrive in the U.S. next month.

Acer’s Chromebox CXI, announced on Thursday (and pictured mounted on a separate Acer monitor above), puts the Chrome OS into a small enclosure measuring 0.6 liters in volume. It runs an Intel Celeron 2957U dual-core 1.4GHz processor, has a 16GB solid-state drive, and promises a boot-up time of just 8 seconds.

The device can include up to 4GB in RAM, has four USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, LAN port for wired network connection, and HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. It’s priced from $179.99, including a keyboard and mouse.
Specs are nearly identical to the Asus & HP chromeboxes, except the Acer is using a Celeron 2957U, whereas the other two use the Celeron 2955U. Acer is also tossing in a keyboard and mouse. Not sure if the other two do so.

I was looking at an Acer C7. It's $200, has a keyboard layout I prefer, and is Intel-based so it's easier to run Linux on it.

A few factors stopper me. I planned to install Linux and run Windows programs within Wine. However, dual-booting Chrome/Linux will reduce available resources on an already resource-slim device. Add Wine to that and there will be less resources. AND Wine might not work well anyway. What a pain.

A secondary factor was that the C7 has a fan. Part of the reason I was looking at a Chromebook is because it's solid-state and therefore less noisy. I don't want a fan.

So I decided against it. I'd be better off with a Netbook as long as it has a full-size keyboard and competes on price. AFAIK, Netbook's cannot compete with Chromebooks on price, yet... Hopefully Chromebooks will force down the price of Netbooks.

Which C7? Define resource-slim?

I have a C720 with 4GB RAM and I don't even notice the fan.

I can't believe that I did it, but I picked up a refurbed HP Chromebook 14 for $200 (w/lifetime mobile data). I wanted to see what all the hub-bub was about and to see if it would be suitable for my technophobic friends and family members.

I have to admit that I'm impressed with what this thing can do. Out of the box, feels exactly like running the Chrome browser on Windows or OSX. That's not a bad thing. But after a little tweaking, I had something that acted like a "traditional" desktop windowing system.

Except for printing (I'm having difficulty getting my Google Cloud Printing capable Brother color laser printer to connect) I can see this thing being perfect for those people.

The concept of installing dual-boot Linux, then running Wine within it, and spending all that time getting stuff to work, and then maybe it won't work. Meh...Why bother unless you want to play with Linux? The only real appeal for me is the price-tag.

I guess if you know Linux well and want a purely Linux box on the cheap, then it can make sense. But I'm so locked-in to Windows progs. Maybe there's a good, light-weight Linux word-processor that fits my needs, but maybe not. Ultimately, for me, it's not worth the distraction atm. I'll keep my eyes open though. Hopefully Chromebooks will force down Windows based devices.
