I suppose if people choose to have a flutter knowing that the yield is not generous then good for them. (Or maybe they're addicted to Kobo Contests )

I wouldn't say I have a flutter, but even 55 or 65 percent is good for me! Sure, if I get a 75 I use it, but even in the better odds contests, I've only gotten a 75 twice. I almost always end up using a 65 from someone here. At half off many of the books I buy are great deals. Obviously your mileage will vary!

You've got to put a value on your time. A flutter is one thing, lightning may strike, but to put in hours to save an extra 25% or 35%? That would have to be one expensive book. Just to put it in perspective, at 2% odds every 50 entries would on average get one 75% off code. At 0.2% odds, that would be 500 entries. If that's still worth it, you might as well wait until the last day, when you get ten entries per email. |

Since I run a blog, we usually have fun with the trivia and the coupons as a bonus. I try to post extra coupons at the blog and here or answer any requests from this thread specifically if I'm lucky enough to get a coupon. And sure, no one has to play if they don't have the time. A lot of my blog followers play until they get a 55 or better, they buy the book they want and then they don't comment further. Nothing wrong with that either. My goal is to win a reader...so I'll keep playing!

Can I confirm that the code perkopolis doesn't work on these discounted books? And being super stingy - are there any trick one may pull to avoid sales taxes?

I didn't buy the Tommy and Tuppence ones (not my favourites) or the first few which are public domain, and I probably missed a few others while trying to avoid the short stories which are all mixed in when you do a search. No, the discount code doesn't work. The tax on 68 books was under $4 for me in Alberta (no provincial tax here), but I don't think there is any way to avoid the federal Canadian tax.

@BearMountainBooks. I didn't misunderstood you. It was just a math exercise to show that a small increase of the discount percentage really adds up. Happy hunting (to all). |
