It was intended as deliberate mockery of the misuse of it that I quoted. Are people really that slow around here? Or do they just skim-read threads, or what? I really do expect readers to be able to keep up a little better. Sheesh.

Granted, most people may not know about agency pricing, but they will know that prices have gone up and they won't want that.

I don't think they'll for the most part notice prices have gone up either, unless it's a large increase. I think most people make a decision to buy a book and go looking for it, they see what it costs and accept that that is the price (most people don't buy enough books, or buy often enough to have more than a very general idea what one might cost ahead of time). They determine from there if they will purchase or not, but I don't think they're cognizant that it might have been $9.99 pre-agency and now costs $12.99 (or whatever).

Adjusted for CPI a $9.99 title in 2010 would be $10.92 in today's dollar. |

Okay, I have read much of this thread, rants included, and really this is all about seeking profit. Amazon needs a ton of it. So, the issue that I see is, what will this do to Kobo in light of the current competition board hearings with the same publishers. Does anyone think Kobo would leave the Canadian market?

I don't chalk up paperback prices increasing to inflation. I chalk it up to greedy BPH using a different paperback format instead of mass market just so they can keep the prices artificially inflated. They gives BS excuses as to why these off paperback formats are better when they aren't better. They feel odd to hold and they feel odd to read. mass market just feels like a book. Those others don't. Prices rise because BPH want to do whatever they can to destroy eBooks and the higher priced the paperback is, the higher price they can have the eBook if they can manage to go back to agency pricing. So, if the eBook is say $14.99 when the book is in hardcover, by having these really expensive paperbacks, they can keep the eBooks at $12.99 when the book goes to paperback. It's all about cheating the customer.

Kobo is in its own dispute over pricing and if their appeal fails to sway the competition bureau it could, potentially and I stress that, leave amazon with a virtual monopoly for ebooks in canada.

Swolf, I think this is a highly competitive and evolving market ... Canada is a country of 33million or so, roughly the population of California, so when looking at consumer pricing and structure financing it is possible to make the financial decision to leave the Canadian market. Kobo was at one time wholly owned by Toronto's Indigo but sold 58% to a Japanese company. If the margins were that good they would have hung on to it I am thinking.
