Finally finished my re-read of Last Stand of Dead Men and am now halfway into Earth Flight by Janet Edwards, the final book in her Earth Girl trilogy. Really enjoying this a lot - so far it's been well worth the wait.

I finally found time to read on Friday, Saturday, and today. I've been 'way ahead of schedule toward my goal of 150 books this year, and that's been a good thing since I read only 10 books in July and as of the 15th, I had only completed 3 books in August. But, I've finished 2 more since then, and I should finish a 3rd by tonight.

Recently finished books are:

Torch of Freedom by David Weber and Eric Flint. It's one of the Honorverse books, 880 pages long, and probably the major reason why I fell behind on my reading pace in late July and early August. It came from Baen books and I have the next book queued up on my Kindle.
Trick or Treat by Kerry Greenwood, 4th in her Corrina Chapman mystery series. This was checked out from the library via Freading, so was read on the BeBook Mini.
Lady Fortescue Steps Out by M C Beaton (originally published as by Marion Chesney). I borrowed this one in July from the Kindle Owner's Lending Library. I'm really excited that this series has been added to Freading, so I won't be confined to only one book per month to finish the series.

I'm currently reading Forbidden Fruit by Kerry Greenwood and listening to King and Maxwell by David Baldacci. I've been knitting and listening each evening instead of turning on the TV, so I should finish King and Maxwell tonight.

Tomorrow starts the Bout of Books read-a-thon, so I should be focusing more on reading than in a normal work week. We'll see how things go.

Hi Hampshire Nanny, Baldacci is one of my favorite authors. I've read all the Camel Club and Will Robie books, except the novellas. Tried but didn't like Ketty Greenwood, though.

Last night I finished "The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding" by Agatha Christie. This was her 62nd book, and was originally published in 1960. It's a collection of six short stories, three of which would be called "novellas" today. Five of them feature Hercule Poirot, and one Miss Marple. Extremely enjoyable, and highly recommended.

Meanwhile, on to Dinosaurs and a Dirigible by David Drake. One from the September Baen Bundle (no longer available as a bundle). A collection of five shorter works.

I've also been reading The Man Who Counted by Malba Tahan. A delightful set of mathematical problems in an arabic setting.

I liked all the problems except the last, when although the reasoning was right, the outcome was lucky.

But it's well worth a read if you can find a copy. Most enjoyable.

I'm reading The Heart of Redness by Zakes Mda (South African poet, playwright, artist and activist). Only a few pages in, but loving it so far. The narrator has a subtle sense of humour that I appreciate.

Still working long hours and not reading much, but I think this will change in September.

I am reading Simon Scarrow's Eagle series. I have already finished Bernard Cornwell's Sharp series, waiting for the next in Saxon Chronicles, and a few others. CS Forester is what hooked me on Historical Fiction, I loved Horatio Hornblower.

Over the weekend, I was able to finish a couple of books. First was the very LONG Honorverse novel, Torch of Freedom. Although this book is from one of the "related" series, I found it to be a very good way to get introduced again to the major characters. I also finished an audio edition of King and Maxwell by David Baldacci.

Now I'm reading Forbidden Fruit by Kerry Greenwood and listening to Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford.

I'm a big Hornblower fan as well. Also a Cornwell fan.

The Simon Scarrow series looks interesting.

I enjoyed several Roman-themed series last year:

Conn Iggulden "Emperor" series about the rise of Julius Caesar, starting with "The Gates of Rome"

Anthony Riches series about Marcus Valerius Aquila (probably a fictional person), a legion officer during the reign of Emperor Commodus - starts with "Wounds of Honour" (surprised that isn't "Wounds of Honor" at amazon.com

Just finished "Landfall" by Nevil Shute.

It is about a young RAF pilot flying in Coastal Command near Portsmouth in late 1939 - early 1940, before the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. He sinks a submarine and is cited by a naval board of inquiry for sinking a British submarine. He transfers to a northern Bomber Command base, flies on a mission dropping propaganda leaflets on German cities, and then transfers to test flying for a dangerous new anti-ship weapon. There is also a romance with a bar girl outside of his social class - he is a professional RAF officer.

The book itself has very good pacing, lots of action.

I found it particularly interesting because it is a fiction book about the early war, and published at the time (1940), by a person who was both a good writer and highly knowledgeable about the subject (Shute was a senior aeronautical engineer before the war who also worked in weapon development during WW2). Especially interesting in that a major plot element was death from 'friendly fire' (what a disgusting circumlocution); even if the outcome in the book was scooby-doo, I'm surprised that he was allowed to raise the possibility in a book published during the war, especially at a difficult time for Britain.

A few oddities in this book for the modern reader, which really do bring home the time it was written in , for example, whenever Shute refers to a plane in the book, it is described as a monoplane. Likewise, the discussions about social class.

If you like historical fiction, I highly recommend the Flashman series by George MacDonald Fraser. Very interesting, funny and accurate.
